New review added to Buccacino's Cucina Italiana

Fairly enjoyable
Been here a couple times now, and both times were completely different experiences. Lunch visit was better than dinner visit.

LUNCH VISIT:

At the office, we heard that Buccacino's had a shuttle service. It's completely free and you get picked up at the office and driven to the restaurant where you have a table ready for you. That kind of service is well above and beyond ANYTHING I have ever experienced, considering it was the owner himself driving the shuttle!

The service at the restaurant was similar.. fast and precise. Everyone was very pleased with the level of service we had there.

The atmosphere was very nice. The level of quality and detail around you is great and very festive for this time of year. However, I noticed that every single chair in the place was of a different style (all mix-matched from the antique store?) which was really neat to see...... until you sit down in one of those uncomfortable chairs. My back killed me.

The food was pretty good. Everyone at the table ordered a different kind of sandwich, but the pasta a few tables away from us smelled much better than anything we had. I had ordered "Diablo Chicken" sandwich because it was supposed to have some heat behind it, but I found it extremely bland. I could taste the bread more than the spices inside.

The price at lunch was about $12 after everything was said and done. What a great value! We had the best service of our lives, we had decent food and the price was less than you pay at a McDonald's for a combo.

DINNER VISIT:

This is when we realized parking for this place is an issue. It's in the heart of Osborne Village, so parking is scarce as it is.. but they only really have 3 spots for parking, and otherwise you have to park blocks away and walk.

The place was packed with people for the dinner service as opposed to the place being nearly empty for lunch service. That gave something to the atmosphere in my opinion. It's a good thing to see lots of people in the place because they wouldn't be there if they didn't think the food was good.

The service was at a crawl though. It was definitely because of how busy the place was, but our coffee cups and drinks were empty most of the time and only got refilled twice. When they refilled, they only filled the cup half way. When service is slow, fill it all the way so that you can tend to other things longer before having to come back!

The food itself was plain again. I ordered Fettuccine Alfredo with added chicken (for $4 mind you), and at the same table we ordered Lasagna and a Mediterranean Pizza.
The Fettuccine Alfredo sauce was too liquid, and didn't taste of much. They came around and asked if we wanted cheese added and I'm glad that I did. The added chicken was non-existent. Definitely not worth what I paid to have it added, and in the end it all tasted like the Alfredo sauce.. like nothing.
The Lasagna was also very plain. It was meat, noodles, and that was it actually. Definitely not like mom makes. The only thing you could taste was a mild hint of Basil and a hint of the cheese added to the top (that was the only cheese in the plate apparently).
The pizza was alright, but the crust tasted like a pan-fried crust from Pizza Hut which isn't usually a favorite as far as pizza goes. The toppings were good, but absolutely everything tasted like the olives as they killed the other toppings on the pizza.

Pricing for the dinner service was also much more expensive, and although I was certain you would get a bigger portion for the increased price, that was not the case.

All in all.. it's a nice clean place to go with fairly good service. Lunch service was MUCH BETTER than dinner service, and it cost a lot less as well.

The thing about fast food is that it's fast food.. you can't go to a place like this expecting beyond excellent service or food quality.

An additional thing to note is that I can guarantee you that if you went there again you would almost certainly get a different person preparing the food (a different drunk monkey). Likewise, at every other location you stand the same chance of having someone who might not be very qualified in food handling preparing your food.

This is the chance you take with fast food. If you want to have a better quality burger prepared for you, venture to a family restaurant which might take a little longer to prepare for you, but the quality will far outweigh the speed at which you get your food.

And yes.. no matter how much of a drunk monkey the person making the food was, it's STILL better than any McDonald's, hands down.

Review updated on George's Inn And Submarine

Not so bad
I've been here a couple times with some of the people at my office. It's quick service and tasty burgers make this place a decent place to go in a pinch. The fatboy burger can easily compete with some of the better ones in town, and you always leave completely stuffed. Not only that, but it's really well priced (and they always have daily specials), so you end up feeling pretty satisfied for the price.

If you're into healthy delights with little to no mess, this is NOT the place for you. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a nice greasy burger that will leave your hands covered (classic fatboy style of course), then give this place a try at least once.

New review added to Huang Pu River Restaurant

Favorite Chinese Restaurant
This place is a hidden treasure in Winnipeg. If you're asking people what the best Chinese places are in town, they'll certainly not say this one.. and when you suggest it they won't know what you're talking about... that's because of its unfortunate location, and definitely not because of the food!

Huang Pu River is in a very bad location along Pembina. It's behind a giant A&W, and has a small sign, and the parking lot entrance is basically at the middle of an intersection, so the chances that you're going to pass by without notice is probably 9/10. I noticed it once while visiting that very A&W that blocks it. Looking across the parking lot I saw the place and decided I would give a try.

After trying it once, I first ordered the dinner for 6. I had 4 people with me, so it was justified. We began eating and were all AMAZED at how wonderful the food was! There wasn't a single bad thing out of the 6+ dishes that we didn't like. Even the carrots (as simple as they are) tasted wonderful.

The atmosphere in the place is VERY lacking. You walk in and see a bunch of tables, and the walls are plain and blue. Nothing special. Recently they added red/white checkered picnic-style table cloths on all the tables.... why?! It looks a bit tacky in there. Go for the food, not the atmosphere, but at least it's clean and tidy. Cleanliness is all you should ask for in any decent restaurant. If they touched the place up with a bit of Chinese style, it would definitely be a bigger hit to most people.. although there are worse places out there.

The service is beyond excellent. The woman who runs the place with her husband is a little difficult to understand for first-timers, but I understand her perfectly now and she is simply amazing. I dare you to try to drink your entire glass of water or your entire kettle of tea without her refilling it. You never have to ask for service there, and she's very friendly in a rather innocent Chinese way.

The food is what brings me back though beyond anything else. This place has received great reviews in the newspaper on several occasions and there is reason for it. This place has the best of everything. I'm trying to think of a popular Chinese dish they make well, but they make every dish well so it's hard to determine what could compete with it elsewhere.

My favorites are: Deluxe Wanton soup, Crispy Ginger Beef, Deluxe chow mein, Shanghi fried rice, Honey Garlic Chicken, Black Bean Beef, szechwan pork strips, deep fried breaded veal, lemon chicken, and... just about everything else actually.

The portions are HUGE, so if you order what I listed above, even with 6+ people you'll have leftovers.

This place has become a family (and extended family) favorite, and every person I convince to go always has a great time there. Every friend I tell about it now brings their entire family there on special occasion. It's really a shame that this place doesn't have a better location!! The place can be rather empty from time to time as a result. I try to spread the word as much as possible.

I don't care if your favorite place is "Hung Garden", "Peace Garden", "Golden Temple", "Oceana", "Oriental Pearl", or any other great Chinese place in town.. if give this place a try there's a good chance it might become a new favorite.

Every time I try a new Chinese place out (I still venture from time to time), I always find myself comparing it to Huang Pu and then thinking "you can't compare this place to Huang Pu... compare it to every other Chinese place in town, but nothing could come close in comparison to the food at Huang Pu".

New review added to Johnny's Marion Restaurant‎

Clean this place up!
It was suggested to me by my mother, and she had it suggested to her by friends of hers who frequent the place. With that in mind I gave it a try.

First thing I noticed was that the sign on the awning was not the same as the name of the restaurant. In fact, there is very little to tell you that you're actually at Johnny's. You walk in and the second thing I notice is how DIRTY the carpet is walking up into the dining area. It looked pretty greasy...

The menu was poorly written, nothing looked appealing. The menu items look like your standard cafeteria fare. Lots of sandwiches, LOTS of spaghetti. In fact, half the menu was spaghetti, or things WITH spaghetti. Tough luck if you don't feel like spaghetti. I might have ordered a pizza, but the picture in the menu made it look pretty bad, and although it might not even be a picture from the actual pizza there, it was a turn-off. The menu was several pages long and I basically just stared at it for 30 minutes unable to decide, because it didn't look like they made appealing food there.

The waitress came by and looked unhappy to be there. No such thing as service with a smile I guess. Who could blame her though? The place looked old and used, and this was supposedly a newly opened place. They could have at least cleaned it up after taking over the restaurant from whatever it was before!

Food came, I had ordered a burger. It was alright but really nothing to rave about (especially with one of Winnipeg's greatest burger locations literally across the street). The fries were bland and tasted like they had simply been microwave cooked. Even the coffee wasn't very good there and had to have been sitting quite a long time.

The place is adjacent to a biker hangout in town and unfortunately attracts some sketchy looking characters.. and although this isn't really part of the restaurant review itself, the people who were hanging around the cash register were very odd looking. There's a single table up at the front there and it looks as though it was for them and them alone. I went to pay and was told that they don't accept ATM payments, but there was an ATM machine by the door.... by those sketchy looking characters in fact. I decided to pay cash instead, and a $20 covered the total for 3 people. Not a bad deal, but it wasn't really worth that much either.

If you want to stare at dirty carpet, old tables, eat bland cafeteria food for prices above that of a cafeteria only to feel uncomfortable with the other customers in the place... maybe this place is for you. For the rest of us out there, maybe give it a second thought and drive up the road to a different restaurant.

New review added to Shangri-La Restaurant & Sushi

Worst restaurant I've ever been to
Now I might give harsh criticism from time to time, but I'm just being honest and want others to be aware of a restaurant's flaws when I see them... but there is no comparison to this place. The experience I had here will be with me the rest of my life, and I want to make others aware of it as well to please avoid this place like the plague.

I went on a weekend, it was lunch and they were serving a buffet and sushi (why a Chinese place has sushi in the first place is beyond me, but I'm willing to give it a shot I suppose).

I made the chief mistake of first not looking at the buffet before sitting down, or instead of walking away at that moment, I decided to give a try. When you're already in the door, it's hard to turn around and walk out!

I reluctantly sat down and looked around me. They had pop music BLARING, the tables were scattered around, none of the dishes on the table matched, the utensils looked like they needed to be retired, they had mix-matched Chinese dividers as walls scattered around. In general it looked like a mess, and this was the first month they were opened!

Now I got up, went to the buffet... there were 4 dishes:
1. Burned noodles (how on earth do you burn noodles)
2. Burned and overcooked fried rice
3. KFC-style chicken
4. Vegetable mix.

I gathered up a little of everything, but the food containers were nearly empty.

Went back to the table and dug in. Yuck! My brain instantly detected something was wrong and I nearly spit out the food. It was burned, it was beyond bland, and it tasted like an old boot. That was the rice. Noodles were much the same. The vegetables were actually UNDERcooked and were crunchy. The chicken was chicken... why was this in a Chinese buffet? I know a lot of places do it, but when it's all you have and it looks like you literally went across the street, picked up a bucket, and called it your own buffet..

It was a buffet, but I definitely didn't go back for seconds. I looked around to see if others were having just as poor of a time and saw a few eating their TERRIBLE looking sushi while seemingly enjoying it. I couldn't understand how they could be!

The only way a person could stand that quality of food, that quality of service, and that quality of atmosphere is if you've never been out of the house before and really don't know that there is better out there.

I paid (I can't believe it), and.. this is the best part.. actually had to go eat somewhere else!! I actually went into a restaurant and was so displeased with it that I left after paying and paid a second time for lunch! It was that bad!

Now I'm generally NOT a picky eater. I'll enjoy anything from diner-quality fast food to cafeteria food, but I would NEVER go there again.

I know that there have been a few locations in the city calling themselves "Shangri-La" over the years, and this might be the latest installment of that chain. There was a Shangri-La on Pembina that I used to really enjoy, but this place is definitely not the same. There's no way it could be worse.

I know it's starting to sound like a rant as to how poor of a place this is, but don't be tricked by the ironic naming of this restaurant! Nothing could be further from "Shangri-La" than Shangri-La Restaurant & Sushi

New review added to Michael P's

Not up to par with competing restaurants
I've been going to this location for as long as I can remember. It used to be a Pony Corral (popular restaurant chain in Winnipeg), but recently changed to a Michael P's. As far as I know this is the only Michael P's in Winnipeg, and there's a good reason for it.

Now neither Pony Corral or Michael P's is really very great, but basically what they tried to do is give the place a new name while keeping the same menu basically. In fact, several things I ordered when it was Pony Corral came back to me exactly the same when it was Michael P's... is this a good thing? Not really. Room for improvement was needed and although they gave it a fresh start, it failed to come through.

Now usually the portions are huge and the price is cheap, but the food is quite often tough, dry, bland, or very poor tasting. The portions might be large, but you'll leave the place wishing they hadn't been. Quantity does not equal quality!

The quesadillas here are very good actually, and the soup is generally good as well... but think about it: Those are two of the easiest things to make! If they were bad too, I'd be really scared.

I was there just last week (I guess I keep going because of the convenient location and because I hope for the best), and I ordered a chicken wrap + quesadillas + poutine on the side.

1. Speaking of the menus, they simply reused the old Pony Corral ones, looks like they put them through the dishwasher, changed the logo on the front and there you have it. Putting them through the dishwasher made the menus look wavy, dirty, and unappealing... the menus!! If even the menus look bad, just wait until you try the food.

2. The chicken wrap came to me tasting like nothing but cheddar cheese and mayonnaise. It was rather tiny, tasted plain, and looked like something I could have just went out and made myself. How do you mess up a simple wrap? Fast food places like subway or quiznos offer better quality wraps than this. Now I know the place doesn't specialize in wraps, but if it's on the menu they should be able to make it properly. If they can't.... take it off the menu!

3. The poutine here used to be one of the best in town. When Michael P's first opened, the fries were crisp, the mozzarella cheese was very melted, the gravy was light. Perfect! Now? Well the last time I was there the fries were soggy, the gravy was thick store bought mix, and the cheese was cheddar cheese (poutine no-no) and was "unmelted" to the point where it looked crystallized! Yuck! This went from possibly the second-best poutine in the city to quite possibly the worst. I was utterly disappointed, because the poutine was something that made me continue going to Michael P's.

3. The quesadillas were good. Delicious in fact. I wish I had ordered two of them instead of ordering the rest of the food, because I wouldn't have been disappointed. They were very simple though.. store-bought tortilla shells stuffed with cheese, tomato, onion..... that's it. How can you go wrong?

The service was enjoyable, fast, and was very cooperative as far as making sure we were happy. The service is probably the only reason I didn't get up and leave.

This was lunch hour and the place was empty. The sight spoke for itself really. Overall it used to be an "alright" place to go, even after it switched from Pony Corral, but it's been a few years now and has gone downhill to the point of being "fair".

Go there for a quick appetizer (quesadillas are good), a beer, and maybe stay to watch sports on the TVs they have around, but don't stay for the food!

You sound very upset about the quality of the pizza and... something to do with tipping? And yet instead of giving this place an extremely poor rating, you still gave it a rating of 5... hm..

To be honest though, I've driven by the place SEVERAL times and even by the looks of the place, it doesn't seem all that appealing.

New review added to Sushi Cushi

Enjoyable in just about every way
This place is probably the hardest to find sushi place in all of Winnipeg. Unless you're really looking for it, you nearly can't find it as it is hidden away within a rather large parking lot for other retail stores alone St. James st.

Once inside, the atmosphere is pretty fancy.. very clean, very dark.. reminds you of a nice steak house or something. It's definitely not the place you would dress up to go to though. There's a little train that runs along the ceiling with a banner for their website on it.

The service is quick, and the room is fairly opened up, so they can't miss you if you need service right away. It was fast, and I was asked about 10 times if I needed help with anything and if the food was good, etc.. some sushi places go straight out and ignore you, but this place did the opposite so it's worth mentioning here.

The food itself is VERY exquisite. Some of the rolls you can order on the menu take a lot of time, a lot of patience, and a lot of skill. They gave me the best looking "caterpillar" roll I've ever seen, and the other rolls like "volcano" looked pretty good on the table beside me. Definitely the best good presentation BY FAR from any other sushi place in town. Not only that, but it tasted very good as well. I felt bad about ruining the presentation..... until I had the first bite, then I couldn't stop.

The price is up there, although if you're used to spending a lot for good sushi, you might not mind it. There are definitely cheaper places to get sushi, but the presentation of the food made the price more worth it to me. I wasn't just paying for rice and fish, but for a little piece of art as well. There were untouchable prices on the menu however. In fact, there's a fish (Kanpachi) on the menu which requires a week in advance ordering, and costs over $150! Now THAT is interesting for the wow value alone.

They do have a website, which highlights their menu, shows prices, AND has pictures which will let you form an opinion before you go.
Have a look:

New review added to Umi Sushi

One of the best kept secrets in town?
I've been here on several occasions and love it every time. When I started going there, I would be the only one in the place, but now when I go at lunch, there's usually a line out the door. People are starting to realize that this place might actually be worth visiting!

The atmosphere is rather neat. You have to walk up a bunch of stairs to get to your seat, and the colors in the dining room are very modern earth-tones. Makes for an enjoyable and relaxing place. It IS rather cramped up there as they try to fit several tables into a very small space. They would be wise to open up the dining area father somehow.

The service is usually alright when there aren't many in there, but when the place is packed, watch out! I once sat in there at the lunch hour and waited 45 minutes to get my food only to have them tell me that they had sent it out for takeout rather than serve it to us! That was the only time it was ever poor though, and they have the standard button on the table if you need to ring for service.

The food is GREAT. The portions are just right for maki rolls, everything is delicious, the yam tempura rolls are absolutely amazing. When you go, definitely think about ordering a noodle dish to go with your sushi, but be warned that the portions are unexpectedly huge! After all the rolls come and you're thinking to yourself "how can I ever finish all of this?", out comes a massive plate of noodles, meat, vegetables...

The biggest attraction to this place if you're not wowed by the food, is the price. Every time I go, someone makes the comment: "This has one of the best tasting sushi at the best price!", and that statement is true in my eyes as well. Best tasting sushi for the best price. There are some great sushi places in town but you always end up paying so much that you can't afford to go back for a few months. With this place, it's affordable enough to have a weekly Friday lunch with friends if you wanted.

I was impressed. Apart from that one instance of bad service, the place is definitely my top Sushi place to go (and I've been to just about every one in town).

New review added to Burger Factory

Met expectations
I wouldn't call it "excellent", but it was above the expectations I had for the place. Ask any long-time Winnipeg resident what the best burger place in town used to be, and they will probably tell you stories of the Burger Factory.
I've heard many many horror stories lately though. The mere mention of Burger Factory these days seems to put a cringe on people's faces.

I decided to try it out anyway.

The food I ordered came fairly quickly, it was a very large portion, and it tasted pretty good to me. Everything is cooked right there in front of you, so the place smells like a kitchen and the food comes at you so hot you can barely hold it.

One thing I remember is that the seating (and atmosphere in general) left much to be desired. It reminds you of any other burger place in town with the highschool cafeteria-style seating and close quarters.

I don't know if the horror stories are true, but I didn't experience one. It's nowhere near the best burger place in town, but it also isn't close to the worst.

New review added to Ocean King Restaurant

The Worst in Winnipeg
I have been to many chinese restaurants and the food there for each one of those places has been excellent and very flavourful, but Ocean King, to be honest, was the 'unexpected' dissapointment. The atmosphere of the place inside was alright, I'd give them that, but the service and food...I mean c'mon, you really call that fine chinese cuisine and damn good service? I think not! For example, their Lemon Chicken that my friend and I ordered was pretty terrible. The sauce was very bland and the was no hint of Lemon flavor! As for the service, all I can say is that I hope she's not that rude to any other customer. Overall, this has to be the worst place.
