A very disappointing meal
On New Year's Eve, our party of four attended this restaurant for dinner. The ambiance was very nice except for being seated at a table near the entrance. This made for lots of traffic and conversation was a bit difficult. My meal was less than impressive. My wife and the other two women in our party said their meals were okay. The missus had a strip loin while the other two ladies had the small filet mignon steaks. I chose the rib steak with rice and vegetables.

The starter salad was good and the dressing tasty. My main course was very disappointing. I've bought better steaks at a chain grocery store and done a better job cooking on my home BBQ. Although the steak was cooked to my liking, it was wafer thin and falling apart. Not a very nice presentation. The rice was bland as were the vegetables. My wife and I split a piece of chocolate cake for dessert. It was very dry and the icing was hard. Again, I've bought better cakes in a grocery store. Coffee was palatable but not great.

The saving grace of the evening was that our server was a very friendly young lady who was very attentive to our group. We got there early in an effort to avoid the later New Year's Eve dinner crowd. By the time our party finished our meal at 7:30 p.m., the place was packed.

The bill, before gratuity, was about $100. I certainly didn't feel that my dining experience was worth one hundred of my heard earned dollars. This was not my first poor experience at this establishment. I had been there for an office Christmas party in 1993. The experience was just as bad then as this visit. I had vowed never to go back. Had my mother-in-law not made the reservations for our New Year's Eve dinner, I would have held true to my word. This second experience has strengthened my resolve to never return to Al's.

Not so special...
Went here for a family get together tonight. Lot's of celebrity pictures on the wall, Gene Simmons, Alexei Kovalev, this place certainly has a history.

Interior was relaxed and classy. Service was polite and quick but not overly warm or friendly. Started the meal with Keith's Amber and a French Onion Soup. The soup was a good size and had a decent amount of cheese but wasn't spectacular.

My main was the House Special Green Pepper Steak, which came with rice, salad and fries. High point was garlic house dressing, quite good. The quality of the steak was okay but the dish was a mess. It was basically a beef stir fry, a very greasy one. Fries were crispy, salad was decent but really it was the dressing that held it together. A friend ordered the same dish and thought their steak was over cooked.

Reviews from my fellow diners were tepid. The waitress offered a small slice of free cheesecake because we were celebrating a birthday tonight. A nice touch. 2 mains, 3 beers, and a soup came to $75 before tip. I wasn't overly disappointed but I don't think I would go out of my way to come back. There are much better steaks to be had in Ottawa, Al's was a big "meh" in my book.

Al's Embarrassment
I’m not sure why this restaurant was busy the Saturday night I took 7 people there. I wish I had read these reviews before suggesting we go to Al’s Steakhouse. You go to a steak house for, well, steak. At roughly $40 a plate this was the most embarrassing restaurant I’ve taken people to in Ottawa. I’ve eaten steak at Hy’s, Baton Rouge, Keg, Prime 360, Issac's, and my own back yard. When I can cook a better steak dinner then is presented at a restaurant that is an embarrassment. Like other reviewers no one got the steak cooked the way they liked it. My order was burn so that all I could taste was the charred beef. The salad was something I taught my 12 year old to make a couple of weeks ago. Come on, Iceberg lettuce, really?! The vegetables we not fresh, they were frozen. The atmosphere was loud and noisy, due to the poor choice of materials used. Absolutely no sound absorbing structure or materials used made for a diner we were all to happy leave. There is so much better value out there for a steak. Come on Al, put in some effort!

A bad experience
I've been there for few times last year. With friends, wife, family etc. Every time I tryied to see the positive but I couldn't. The food is not that good and pricy. The steaks were never cooked the way anyone asked for!!!! My wife like the meat well done... We had to ask twice for the meat to be put on the grill again because it was under cooked!!!! Bad bad service with attitude.

Never Never again. They lost my business for at least 2 large events I had to organize for my family (a Baptism and a family reunion) that I took somewhere else.

Visited many times over the years
My better half and I have visited Al's Steakhouse on Elgin Street many times and we have never had a bad experience. The wait staff have always been very personable and warm with us - as has been the manager. We normally order the same items - steak, fish etc., and the food has always come to the table hot and to order. For myself, I like my meat (steak) blue - yes, blue - and I have never had to send a steak back. The house salad is a plain salad (head lettuce, one tomato, one cucumber etc.) but it really is a perfect side for a nice nutty, fresh off the grill steak. I would recommend either the house blue dressing or the house garlic dressing - either are very rich and decadent, but the cool lettuce cuts the level of richness just enough. The two things I don't like are the following: rice is often served with items like fish or chicken - Al's has the best sour cream for baked potatoes I have found - the rice is really not meant for eating, it's just meant to keep the meat warm/hot, and really doesn't have any flavour - it is necessary evil so to speak; also, the vegetables that come with the meal are somewhat limp and tired - they seem to be part of a frozen vegetable mix that has been slightly over steamed.

Other than those two areas, I can't really fault Al's for anything. I must say the bar staff know their drinks and can make a killer Caesar. Also, they have the best buns - which I was told were made by Bagel Bagel.

I highly recommend a visit if you want to experience a modern but old fashioned real steak house.

Disappointing
The last time I went to Al's was more than 5 years ago. It was a good experience, and I kept recommending for people to go there.

I went last night with a group of friends, after one in our party was hesitant to try Big Daddy's next door.

Four of us ordered steak (rib steaks, pepper steak, filet mignon, all asked for medium-well) and one had chicken breast. The food arrived in a decent amount of time, and very presentable. The sides were very bland -- no seasoning at all on the rice or potatoes, and small portion of vegetables. Two of us had our steaks cooked quite unevenly... mine started out medium-well, but the other half was medium-rare. The quality of the meat is good, so I didn't mind the undercooked part so much.

Despite being half capacity and at least 4 waiters walking around, the service was not so good... the manager or owner did come by asking how things were a few bites into our meals, but our server never checked up on us to ask how the food was or if we wanted anything else -- two of us shared a glass of water since nobody came by to fill our glasses.

It's not likely I'll be coming back here, and I definitely won't be recommending it anymore.

All steakhouse...sucks...try Prime 360!
I have been to Al's steakhouse on Elgin numerous times for numerous occasions and each visit get worse!
I always get the Filet Mignon which was cooked to my liking but NO FLAVOR...At all!!The steak was extremely watery!!!??? You figure that one out if you can because I certainly can not! The side dishes are extremely small and bland at that. The service is hit and miss, sometimes average, other times below or non-existential! I will no longer be going there. A few people in our party were sick on different occasions after eating there steak.
Stay away from this place, spend a little more and go to Prime 360 on lauier or if that's too pricey, try The Keg- not much better but better then als!

Nice new facelift but service needs to catch up to new look
My colleagues and I went to this restaurant for lunch and several of us were disappointed with the service. Initially, I was impressed with the renovation work that they have completed so that it looked like a posh upscale restaurant as opposed to the dark oppressive mob type setting as in the past. The hostess was very kind in finding me a seat since I arrived late in order to sit with my fellow colleagues and she had to find an extra chair. The waitress that served us was not very pleasant. I don't think she cracked a smile the entire time she served us. Our food took about 45 minutes to arrive which is quite slow given most people at this hour need to head back to work and don't usually have the luxury of having a 2 hour break! She had also mixed up an order of a colleague but instead of admitting her mistake, she accused my colleague of placing the wrong order. Regardless of whose fault it is, good customer service does not dictate for the server to blame the customer! The portion sizes were on the small size whereby another colleague mentioned that he was still hungry and needed to eat another meal. The hamburger I had was nothing special. The server also never came around to ask how things were or if we required anything further. I had to go get my own ketchup. When a few of us asked for the bill, she took quite awhile to bring it out. She had printed them out but then went to chat with another colleague while it sat there. We were tempted to go and grab the receipts because we could see them! Then, when she passed them out and I had put my credit card out, rather than taking the card and bill to process, she started clearing away the plates. In the end, I just paid cash so that I would not have to wait further for the processing of the bill. The other thing we noticed was that the tip had been included in the bill but she never bothered to inform us. So I almost ended up leaving her a bigger tip than necessary. One positive was that the bill was actually lower than the prices on the menu - probably because the menu prices were for dinner? They should have a separate lunch menu if that is the case or an insert. Conclusion is that I would not be returning there unless I am forced to because of another work related event.

Bad Service Leaves Sour Taste
I went to Al's on new year's eve hoping for a nice dinner. I made reservations for 4 at eight, and after waiting about 10 minutes was then given a table. We were seated by the windows that faced Elgin St. at the front of the restaurant in the booth second to the one in the corner. I'm being specific about where we were seated because I don't know our server's name and if anyone was there that night around the same time, the server that we received worked that front corner.

Now, the food was pretty good- I actually thoroughly enjoyed my salmon steak when I was not fuming over the horrible waitress. All four of us had different appetizers and out of the lot, I found mine (calamari) to be the best. My friend's coconut shrimp was pretty regular and nothing special. The stuffed mushroom plate was a bit too butter-filled for my taste, but was quite good.

Now, back to the service. I obviously can't be certain as to why we received such inattentive service, but mostly we felt that it was because of our age. We were a young group, separate bills--perhaps the waitress thought that we weren't going to tip well? I don't know what it was but we probably did perpetuate the younger-individuals-don't tip well stereotype because we in fact did not tip well but only because of the really, really, really bad service. The waitress was rude, cold, and overall did not seem to care about our table. Food took excruciatingly long to get to us (we finally got out at 10:30) and we made sure that we ordered our main dishes right when we were almost done our appetizers so that we would not be waiting long. We were wrong. The waitress also remarked that we had changed spots with an annoyed tone to us twice and on the second time, she was holding the bills and didn't even ask us which meals we had so that she could properly hand them out. Instead she dropped them on the table briskly, made an annoyed facial expression, and walked away.

She is by far the worst waitress I've ever had and will not be returning to that establishment on account of her poor service. Meanwhile, my sister who also had reservations had a great time with another waitress where she was seated on the other side of the room behind the bar. For reference, this waitress has long black hair, she's quite thin and during the service, her hair was tied back in a pony tail.

It is ridiculous that at a restaurant that I'm sure prides itself on being classy has a waitress that brings down their image.

I've been a couple of times in the past month, and enjoyed my meal (once steak, once chicken) both times. A couple of negatives - the service both times was a little off. The first time, it took us much longer than normal for us to be seated and the server forgot a portion of my meal. The second time, the server said "Bon Appetit" every five seconds, which got quite irritating. I even had to listen to her say it to other tables. Maybe I'm just sensitive.

Also, quite expensive. I know it's a high end steakhouse, but the Keg is just as good and less expensive, if you can believe it. Still, the food is good. Just not $33 a plate good.

Would never go back
Both my husband and I were there with a group of friends, I ordered a steak, it was tasteless, the worse I ever eaten. I then asked the waitress for a side order of peppercorn sauce (hoping it would add taste). We had to get up to get extra water as the waitress was never around and had plenty of attitude and on top of that it wasn't even busy. When we got our bill, I noticed that we had an extra charge of $8 so I thought the waitress made a mistake and had added someone else's drink on our tab. To our surprise she said the cost of $8 was for the gravy which was cognac gravy. I asked that the cost be lowered or removed as I had not ordered a cognac gravy and was never madea aware that I would be charged for this ridiculus amount. I also asked that she speak to the manager which in turn did not want to lowerer of remove the cost nor did he want to meet with me. This was my first experience at this restaurant and I would never go back. The food was terrible, way to expensive for what it is and terrible customer service(I regretted not going to Hy's steakhouse that night)

Okay, NOW i'm impressed
After an extended break, back again, Nov 2008, busy Saturday nite. And i do mean busy. People lined up for tables, people at the bar, large parties, 2somes. Bus-Y.

That said, we were ten minutes early for an 8pm rez and our table was ready in seconds.

The staff HUSTLE. They are moving ALL the time, yet somehow our waitress managed to deliver menus, water, drinks, aps, food and even check in whether we needed anything. She was clearly running hard, but managed to be pleasant, professional and helpful - full points for service and I regret not knowing her name to commend her specifically. Manager and maitre'd both stopped by to check in too, which was a nice touch.

The place was busy and it was loud, but it's a steakhouse on Elgin, so this isn't unexpected. The new decor is really nice and improved the overall atmosphere of the place.

Now the food... we were there for the steak and steak we got. My past trips to Al's have always featured good steak but for the price just not good enogh - it's a steakhouse - the steak should be great. This time it was. Awesome. A sirloin and a filet minion, both done exactly as ordered, tasty and not too fat nor overdone. I have only good vibes from the meat. Sides of veg were nice - crispy and not soggy like they had come from a package. No complaints about the fries and baked potato but spring for the sauteed mushrooms and you will not be sorry. Starter salads were just chopped veg in iceberg but the house garlic dressing could make anything taste good. Dessert... don't even get me started on the coconut cream pie. It was cream pie perfection.

Decent wine list by the glass and selection of cocktails.

I'm totally back on with Al's. Will go back. Will send others. Will consider selling body parts for more coconut cream pie.

Al's is terrific!
Visiting Ottawa (and being scooter bound) I saw that many restaurants were impossible to enter. Al's seemed that way until my husband inquired and was told of the level rear entrance. A friendly greeting at the back door and we were welcomed into the warm ambience of Al's. There were no disappointments with the service, the atmosphere, the wine or the food. We both had fish that night; my husband ate salmon and I enjoyed orange roughy, a wonderful medley of vegetables, and the best mashed potatoes I've ever eaten in a restaurant! Even the garnish of sweet potato crisps was a surprise. The food was fresh and the portion generous. This was my husband's second visit to Al's and my first. When I return to Ottawa I'll be sure to eat at Al's on Elgin. Until then I'll just sing it's praises.

My husband and I are always satisfied with Al’s. The food is delicious and staff always appears very pleasant. Last time I was there was in January, we were a group of seven, and were seated quite quickly. The service was great, the food was delicious. My out-of-town guests were very impressed with the restaurant, and said they would return next time they were in town.

Always a Good Steakhouse to Visit
I have always enjoyed Al's and went there with a group for a birthday December 22nd with about 8 people. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, the owner/manager was there and checked in with us from time to time. the service I found was quite personal. The salad to start with was great, it's simple, with iceberg lettuce, a slice of tomato and shredded carrots and has a most excellent garlicy dressing. My husband had a pate appetiser that he claimed was great in the meantime. For the main course I had the Filet Brochette wich was really excellent and cooked just the way I'd asked....everyone else was pleased with their meals too, and kept saying how good it was, so I don't know what the last poster was talking about....We will visit this restaurant for many more years.

Overpriced sh**ty food
I went there yesterday for a friend's birthday. First there was an homeless in the parking that followed us to the door hoping we would give him money for having "helped" to park the car by showing us an empty spot. Then we discovered our table (a reservation for 15 had been booked about a month in advance) and I was much disappointed when I saw that we had a very fancy view of the counter and sink in which they drop the dirty dishes before taking them back to de kitchen. After about half an hour of waiting we got 6 small fresh-from-the-freezer bread loaves for 12 people and we waited another half hour to get some more for the other people at our tables. An hour later, we finally got the menus and it took a good 20 minutes for the waitress to come back and ask us what we'd like to order. Some people asked a bunch of questions about the dishes but you could see that she didn't really knew how to explain everything and give extra details on preparation en presentation of the dish. She also could barely speak a comprehensible French even though she WAS French. Then, I got my onion soup that tasted only like salt and fat. About ten minutes after I got my salad. Though the dressing was tasty, it only consisted of iceberg lettuce with a touch of grated carrots. When I got my plate (I had ordered a black peppercorn and mushroom filet in a cognac sauce) that was another disappointment! My steak was swimming in an ocean of sauce with 3 or 4 pieces of undercooked fresh-from-a-frozen-package brocoli, carrots and an unidentified yellow vegetable and an overcooked baked potatoe. Everything was way too salty especially the cognac sauce (but at least you could taste the alcohol in it), the veggies were soaked with butter and the potatoe skin was about 40% burnt. The steak had a very greasy taste and there had lots carbonized stuff from the griddle sticking on the edges of the filet. I never saw any black peppercorns, whole or cracked in the sauce either! Again I was much disappointed! All that for 56$! The tip was also already included in the bill so I couldn't express my discontentment by leaving only 10% instead of 15%.

I will never visit again!

For a delicious steak experience, go to The Keg instead. You won't be disappointed and you will pay about 10$ less for ten times the quality!

Not worth the price
Overpriced, and resting on its laurels. Their signature house salad garlic dressing is so rife with MSG that it made me and one of my coworker's ill. I called the next day to ask if they do indeed add MSG and they agreed. Steaks are ok but honestly I can buy a good cut and grill one just as well on my bbq. Not worth what they charge.

Avoid
If you expect the normal standard of a good steakhouse.A NY cut sirloin was riddled with gristle and all we got from management(a man suffering from communication difficulties) was - you should have told us and we would have given you a new steak. This was after he breezed by out table earlier and left without even allowing enough time for response.
How one can discern without eating a good portion of a steak
that it will ultimately prove substandard is a secret that Al's manager can explain. How a customer would like a fresh steak when 3 dining companions are proceeding with dinner is a mystery known only to Al's apparently.
No wonder they rely on an award from 2001 on their website. I have eaten a number of times at Al's going back a good few years. This place is going downhill and now cannot be considered a top rank steakhouse. I know what the standard should be and experience it regularly in Canada and the U.S.
A most unsatisfying dining experience and a bill north of $200. for four.
There are much better places in Ottawa to spend good money.
A note to visitors- do not expect a standard of Hy's or say Ruth's Chris but you will pay equivalent prices.

They brought out the wrong order, and insisted I ordered it. I think I know the difference between a filet, and a ribeye. They corrected it, but was more medium well than medium rare. But the worst part was being charged for both on the bill. The server spilt wine on my sleeve, there was more, but I don't remember. It was the second worst time I have had in a restaurant. I will go back and drop another $200, to see if it has gotten any better.

not good. I ordered the filet and wanted to sub a caesar for my house salad. The server hassled me about this for a while, 'til I agreed to pay xtra. what I got was a crummy house salad with cheapo lettuce and a side of caesar dressing in one of those little kraft-type containers. Classy! Gimme the Keg any day.

I have been to Al's Steak house many times and the food is consistently good. (Steak or Seafood, Potatoe and veggies)This is a higher end restaurant and the prices are comparitively good to other Steak houses. The servers all wear the white and black dress attire but you can go casual if you wish. If you are not in a rush and want good service and good food i would recommend Al's to anyone.

I have eaten here on and off for 20 years. It has allways been consistent. Its a steak house and if you go eat the steaks, they are great. Sea food..not so good, but hey its a steak house. Its been open since the 60's and its family run, with so many places that have opened and closed it Ottawa sice that time there must be a reason why its still there...just great steaks and service.

I found the steak to be overpriced and not very well prepared or aged. My wife and I received terrible service as well. Not a great experience for the two of us.

the place is hyped for nothing. I was amazed that even after complaining to the manager/owner, he did nothing about the badly cooked steak

Excellent (287.22)

We were about 25 of us at a company function. The service was great, I had the orange roughy and most of the others had steaks of various varieties.

The place was packed on a Tuesday evening and I can understand why. The steaks were well received by all, great appetizers, lots of nice dinner rolls before. Also a lovely tossed salad with that famous garlichy dressing.

Other steak houses come and go but Al's in an institution. Why pay for steaks in the thirty dollars plus range, when you can dine at Al's for better quality and less expensive? The place is a bit circa 1992 ambience, but the food makes up for it.

Having been to the Bells Corners location a few times in the past, I tried the Elgin Street location for the first time on a Tuesday night. The inside appears to have been renovated not so long ago. For a Tuesday night, the restaurant was surpringly full.

As has come to be expected with Al's, the service and food were great. I ordered the filet mignon with shrimp and my dining companion had the 8oz filet with the soup of the day to start. All meals come with a house salad that comes dressed with a homemade garlic dressing which is to die for. The steaks were cooked to perfection.

Total cost for dinner with taxes and tip was $110 including a glass of wine and a coffee. I should note that the glass of wine I had cost $8.95 for a relatively small glass whereas the bottle retails for $10.95 in the liquor store....which is somewhat of an excessive markup. However, that being said, the rest of the meal was fabulous and I would not hesitate to return
