Meze is an example of the healthy Mediterranean diet...

Meze an eating style dates back to antiquity, it is a meal comprised of many of small dishes that make lunch or dinner a fun experience. The main reason for being around the MEZE table is to share thoughts with friends over an array of delicious food and a glass or two of wine or Ouzo. MEZE means party food - so let's party!

Mediocre food for the price, long waits, and poor execution.
I went with a group for a work lunch. Due to the size of our group, we ordered two days in advance in order to simplify things. This place serves Greek inspired tapas, so we were told to order at least three to four items, as the plates were small.

It’s a very nicely decorated little place. The restaurant is located in a house that they converted so the layout reflects that. The front seating area is where I imagine the living room was. To get to where we were seated in back of the house, you went down a narrow hall past the bathrooms and kitchen.

We arrived at noon on the dot and took our seat. Drinks were ordered and served. Everyone was having a good time while we patiently waited for our food. An hour had passed and nothing came out. No salads or appetizer like plates. Our patience began to wane as many of us had busy schedules. Another fifteen minutes later and a few plates started trickling out of the kitchen. By one thirty, I had yet to see any of my food. An hour and a half for small plates that we had pre-ordered? Unfortunately that was the case for 99 percent of our party. Some of the other one percent received all his or her dishes at once, which everyone found odd. People started grumbling and to be honest I had pretty much lost my appetite since it was going on two o’clock. When the food finally arrived, most of us wolfed it down, as we needed to get back to work. The food was pricey for what you get, so getting it late only made things worse. Some people did not get their food until two o’clock. Two hours for measly Chicken Brochettes! The Greek poutine that sounded great on the menu was dismal. For 10 dollars we received a small bowl of tepid fries with stone cold St. Albert curds, a few pieces of stewed lamb, and gravy. The curds were the only redeeming quality of the dish. The 10-dollar pulled lamb tacos came out after a nearly two-hour wait with burnt tortillas. The tacos are about the size of a small coaster were also cold. This story repeated itself through out our time there. By that time everyone just wanted to leave because this “lunch” was taking way longer then anyone expected. In some cases people were asking for their bills before receiving any food. Blackberries and smart phones were abuzz as people scrambled to reschedule meetings. Others just left their money with someone else to pay and left. The poor souls who were served last did not get out of there until 2:30 in some cases.

The waiter did his best under the circumstances. Complaints to the owner were met by feeble excuses that I considered unprofessional. Do not blame customers for you lack of preparedness. Whining that we are large group and the restaurant is busy does not negate the fact that a two-hour wait for preordered food is unreasonable at the prices you charge. This was a cash cow for your establishment. I have gone to many work and social events and have never had this happen.

I doubt we’ll be back.

Great food but a bit pricey
Had diner last night and really enjoyed it. The waiter was very knowledgeable. The menu has tapas style items (small plates to share). We ordered the Aroma 5 (which included a peppers, cucumber, red onion and feta salad, dolmades, zucchini patties, cheese stuffed "sausage" and another type of sausage). Everything tasted really good! We also ordered the scallops in a puff pastry. They were really good but for 18$, we expected more than 2 scallops.
If you enjoy good food and don't mind spending a little (ok, maybe more than a little - the cheapest bottle of wine is around 36$), I really recommend this place.

Aroma Meze review
Service: good
Food tastiness: good
Glueten free options: very good

Value for money: Very poor. Portions very small. It advertises itself as a tapas-style place, with lots of small plates for tasting. The plates are indeed small, but the prices are not. $14 for 4 ribs . $16 for 4 shrimp gnocchi. $16 for 4 cheese-filled dates. The only reason I didn't leave the place starving, was because I had 4 glasses of water.

To top it all off, there was tinfoil in the middle of one of the dates (possibly from the cheese wrapping). The chef did come and apologize, but I thought the $16 item would've been removed from the bill. If it was a hair, a mouse dropping or a piece of glass, it would've (???), but no.

So, feeling like I had overpaid already, then to not get a discount when the food was contaminated, I was very disappointed.

Note - this was at the Wellington St. location. I can't comment on the Nepean St. location.

Well what can I say
Tried this place last night and I was suprized. Service was good, atmosphere was ok (a bit tacky).

We had 4 small plates. One was chicken stuffed with spinach. Was incredible. We had the Domaldes, best I can ever recall having (very lean meat, very little if any rice). We also had the veggie cassorole and the grilled watermelon (the grilled cheese tasted like chicken in some ways and the olives added a nice touch).

All the dishes were extremely good, and the prices were acceptable ($80 before tip and we had 5 drinks).

What I really loved about this place is they served each dish when it was piping hot (I love food served the moment it leaves the grill).

Beer and wine selection were good. We will definately be back. In fact I want to go back now.

They ran out of cheescake (made with feta), so will have to return to try that out.

Top Notch Experience
I heard great things about this place - and it lived up to its reputation!

This place is just a great experience - I love the concept of "mezes" - a bunch of small plates to share with everyone at the table.

Everything we had was very delicious.. I'll try to recall all we had:

Pita Bread w/ spinach dip (Spanakomizithra) - bread was fresh and amazing

Hortiatiki (Greek salad) - very good

Loukaniko (greek sausage) - was good but probably one of my less favorite dishes

Spanakopitakia - good

Saganaki - Flambéed cheese - probably my favorite dish (or one of them)

Phyllo Cups Escargots - Very good

My Baby Backs - Amazingly tender ribs

Calamari Two Ways - Pretty good, not my favorite

East Coast Scallops - Scallops were good not overly fond of the Wasabi on top

Dessert:

Feta cheese cake & Baklava - cheese cake was tasty but was more like candy - I peronally prefer rich cheesecake style. Im not a huge fan of Baklava but was OK.

Wine: Cabernet, Merlot (Red) - real good, went nice with the meal

Overall great experience, very social meal. We were there over 3 hours dishes nice and evely spaced.

WaitresS was super nice - Im usually very picky on service but she did a wonderful job - water was always full, not checking up too often, good recommendations - very solid!

No mints with check, but did manage to score an awesome pen :)

Price overall might be a bit pricey, but definitely worth it because of the great service, fantastic food and quality experience.

Strongly recommended

Too expensive for what you get
I got to the restaurent early and the service was excellent as was the greek wine. The food was however very overpriced and underflavored. If you are used to good greek cuisine ( i.e. Marathon souvlaki in montreal ) this place is not for you.

totally worth it
Visited tonight, using a Christmas gift card. We really enjoy tasting menus, and figured a small plate menu would be up our alley. From the moment we arrived the service was excellent.

Right off the bat the server explained the menu to us and advised that we begin with four plates and perhaps the pita and dip - great advice, as we had just enough room at the end of our meal for dessert. Clearly the server knew the menu. She also knew the wines, and made a wonderful suggestion of a greek grape / merlot blend.

We began with the pita bread with eggplant/garlic/onion dip. The dish was literally wiped clean as this was fantastic. Next came the Greek salad - delicious and fresh with a fantastic Greek cheese and wonderful kalamata olives, neither over-seasoned nor over-dressed. The veggies were crisp and clean.

Next came calamari done two ways - deep fried and stuffed and baked. Tha calamari what the shortcoming of the evening. As with many restaurants around town, it was over cooked and somewhat tough. The batter on the fried calamari was not crisp - perhaps the oil not hot enough? the filling in the baked was great.

Mini Greek beef burgers stuffed with cheese came next. They were lean yet moist and tender, and stuffed with a rich, gooey Greek cheese. A traditional recipe we were told. I just wish I could emulate this recipe at bbq time!

The penultimate dish was escargot in phylo cups. This was the star of the show. Tender escargot in a cream and basil sauce, sitting in a beautiful phyllo basket. We could have eaten many more servings of this.

Our meal was nicely finished with awesome chocolate dipped feta cheesecake with sour cherry reduction - four little pieces of delight.

The final bill including a bottle of wine came in at $123 after taxes and before tip, and our bellies were nicely full. Our water glasses were consistently topped up, and our opinions on all dishes sought. All in all this was a fantastic dining experience that we can't wait to have again.

Too much over priced. It's not worth it!
It's just too much over-priced and not worth it, e.g., $19 for just 4 very small pieces of lamb, which made me feel really being ripped off and would never go back.

I've been here 4 times, and it's quickly becoming one of my favourites. I've had a variety of dishes, and, while some are better than others, all have been very tasty. I find that the vegetarian dishes are especially delicious, the village salad, zucchini cakes and phyllo tartlets being prime examples. I'm also in love with the varieties of dip available.

I'm not a wine drinker, and neither are my typical dining companions, so while we may be missing out on some of the whole 'experience', we come away with a less intimidating bill. The service has always been nothing but friendly and professional. Love this place.

Not my favourite
We had some gift certificates to spend here and decided to take advantage of a night off without the child.

We liked the wine selection as we are fans of greek wines and it was served at a proper temperature which was a nice touch. The food however was a little disappointing for the price as it did not meet the quality the price point would suggest.
we ordered:

Pita and eggplant dip: Ok
Meatballs: good
Dolmades: very good
Squid two ways: ok
Duck Confit: not good. Chewy and too sweet.

2nd visit
I went to Aroma Mezze for my second time this past Saturday night. My boyfriend and I had a $100 gift certificate so we decided it was time to use it up.

No major complaints about this place, except for the fact that you are really not getting value for your money. At the end of the day, your bill is going to be steap. Considering what you are getting, there are better places to spend your money.

We ordered a bottle of wine and had six small plates:

1.One of the dips with pitta bread (ok)
2.Phyllo tartlets (very good)
3.Grilled vegetables (good)
4.Artichoke and eggplant skewers (very good)
5.Ostrich medalions with candied plums (ok - way too sweet, it was overwhelming)
6.Scallops with wasabi and seaweed (good)

The bill came up to $143 before tip. We could have dined accross the street at Beckta for the same price and would have been more satisfied with each a appetizer and a main, and it would have been a gourmet, culinary experience.

I don't think this place is horrible. I think it's a wonderful concept, but the prices are just too steap for what you are actually getting.

Will I go back? Probably not by choice.

A delicious experiment
I finally tried this restaurant last week for lunch with some girlfriends. I'm certainly glad we did. The concept is fabulous. Why limit yourself to ordering one thing on a menu and hoping it's to your liking? This restaurant lets you try a little bit of many things.... and if you're like us, you pick your favourites and go for round 2!! At first glance when your plate comes, it seems a little chintzy... the portions are definitely small, but that's the point. Once you try a variety, trust me, you'll have enough. We first ordered one "flight" each(i.e. a plate with 4 choices), and that way, ordered 12 different selections to share. All were yummy, but some definitely stood out. We ordered those again, on 2 additional flights (for the record, the Kataifi Digby Scallops, the Loukaniko (Greek sausage tossed with caramelized fennel and orange zest) and the Kolokithokeftedes (zucchini cakes)were unanimous favourites)

While a somewhat expensive lunch, it was truly fabulous.

The decor is lovely and we were quite comfortable. The table settings are quite impressive. It's a little bit noisy but not irritatingly so. Our server was pleasant and attentive. All in all, a terrific experience. I'll definitely go back to sample the selections we didn't try and to savour my favourites again.

Always Wonderful
This is one of my favourite restaurants in Ottawa and I go at least once a month, either for lunch or dinner. I've just been reading some of the reviews and I think that most people "get it" - the small plates vs. the usual huge portions seen in local restaurants, which is nice to see, and bodes well for boith mezze and tapas to really take off in Ottawa.

One observation: someone suggested that it was not a busy place and that no reservations were needed. Aroma (no apostrophe required) is very busy, both at lunch and dinner, so if you don't want to be disappointed - particularly if you want more than a table for 2 - make a reservation!

Enjoy!

I have been to Aroma meze twice now, and have thoroughly enjoyed each visit. The atmosphere is very warm and the service is friendly and personable. The waiters are happy to steer you through both the menu and the wine list, and are knowledgable about both..
It is an opportunity to try many different dishes, as they definitely small plates. I particularly enjoyed the beef tenderloin wrapped in phyllo, and the shrimp with gnocchi. This is definitely a step above any other greek restaurant in the city. Yes, it is more expensive, but it is worth it!

Small plates for sure
We had lot's of at this reataurant because we were in good company. However when they specify small plates, they really mean small plates. There are only appetizers, we were 6 people, and the Sommelier said when we order they would bring enough for the whole table to share . . . We had to share 3 thin slices of a tomatoe with a thin slice of buffala mozzarella broiled over??? The food is very flavorful but the portions horrible. Go there for drinks and munchies before going out to a Dinner!

A lovely place
Went there last evening for dinner. My companion and I tried four or five dishes .. the grilled octopus and Greek sausage were fantastic, the rice in grape leaves with yogurt was excellent.

Overall, the service was top-notch, friendly and our waitress made several excellent suggestions for both wine and food .. we were well looked after, but never felt rushed.

A bit pricey, but good value for a nice, slightly self-indulgent night out.

One of Ottawa's Greatest Tapas & Meze Restaurants
We went to A'roma last night with some friends thinking we would try something different. We have tried numerous tapas bars in Ottawa but have often come out disappointed and were wondering if Ottawa was ever going to get a good Tapas place. Well we were pleasantly surprised and happy we found A'roma.

The food here was excellent, with each dish being carefully prepared and exquisetly balanced. The dishes were paced out so that we were able to enjoy each dish and our conversation, and did not feel like we were being rushed out of the place. There was a great selection of Greek Meze and mediterranean tapas. The Escargots in Phylo cups were too good to describe.

Our waiter was excellent and attentive to our table without hovering. He was able to recommend an excellent wine when the bottle we ordered was out of stock. He was very knowledgable about each of the dishes as well as Greece itself.

Overall, we were soo happy to find this restaurant and are definately going to be visiting it again!

Very nice experience
Tried this restaurant based on a recommendation of a friend. I thought the menu was very interesting and there were many dishes that I would have liked to try but based on the waiter's recommendation we only ordered 5 plates for 2 people. As it turned out that was just the right amount. The food was very nice, perfectly cooked and all the items were very enjoyable. Having only recently been introduced to 'small plates' I think I'm hooked since I enjoy trying new things and having a variety of tastes during a meal. Our waiter was great and I would call the service gracious and informative. The prices are not as cheap as Tapas night at Petit Bills Bistro, but the menu options are somewhat finer. I will definately go back.

Great mezze and gracious service
My wife and I dined here on the evening of 7/18 and had a wonderful time exploring their fairly diverse menu. We've eaten at many mezze restaurants and made our own as well, and so when we say A'roma is good, it is not said lightly.

We tried many of their Greek and Mediterranean dips/sauces and every one was different and well-crafted, yet simple as well. They seem to be using high quality ingredients, as substandard building blocks make for very bad mezze. We found every dish - from the eggplant roulade (wow) to the pork with ajaki(awesome) to the crispy zucchini and feta rounds to be excellent. Even with a large group in the large dining area in the back and a group of...um...loud and excited ladies in the front, their staff did well keeping things moving with minimal deadspace. Good wine list, though a bit overpriced (even for a restaurant) and sadly lacking wines by the glass. But hey, you can't have everything. Dessert was wonderful as well, with 3 dessert groups to choose from. You can't go wrong with any of the three!

The only other small thing that would make the dining room better would be some wall coverings to dampen the overexuberant/overly loud customers - which can be a good problem to have! At least you can tell they are having a good time!

Highly, highly recommended by two people who know mezze!

Great website here by the way. After reading many of the reviews here, I decided I needed to contribute a bit to help others and I have been helped. Nice work!

___________

Just an additional comment I forgot to include. With dessert and tip (no drinks), $35/person will leave you very happy indeed!

Our waitress gave us excellent service, suggested dishes and overall was awesome. If you like to pick from different plates and experience an abundance of different tastes, this is the place. We just went to A'Roma Meze last night. We found the food to be exceptional. It is also relatively cheap (meze are between $6-$18). Good wine selection. The ambience is condusive to discussion among friends.
I highly recommend it. And if you are unsure, just order one round of meze.

We will definitely go back.

Four of us had a fabulous meal last night at A'Roma Meze.
The restaurant is small but had a nice cozy atmosphere. The padded benches and pillows make you feel very comfortable.
Our server was extremely pleasant and helpful and really enhanced our experience.
Her suggestion was that we order one plate per person per round and that for four people, normally you would go three rounds and end up having 12 plates unless you wanted dessert in which case 2 rounds (8 plates) would probably be enough.
We did end up sharing 8 plates and having dessert.

Our plates were:
-seared tuna with feta and tomatoes
-mustard crusted salmon with beet purée
-spanakopita
-cheese and spinach stuffed eggplant
-calamari two ways
-tempura scallops with mustard aioli
-beef in filo pastry with garlic mousse
-fries with melted cheese and garlic aioli dip

All 8 were just delicious.

For dessert we had a trio tasting plate which was perfect for four people. It consisted of: Baklava, Tiramisu, and a lemon custard filo pastry. YUM!

With this wonderful meal the girls shared a bottle of Pangeon, a greek red wine and the boys had Alfa, a greek beer.

The bill only ran us about $150 for four people and a great evening was had by all.

I love this restaurant! Partly because I am a big fan of tasting plates as opposed to a big American style steak & fries...

Aroma is basically a tapas & wine bar (they call the small plates "mezze" which I believe is greek). It offers a fantastic selection of greek + other Mediterrean small (& tasty) plates (the feta was fantastic, as well as the stuffed dates, and the ouzo shrimp), good wine selection and very attentive and friendly service.

Unfortunately when we went they were having some difficulties (city bureaucracy) getting their patio opened.

We'll definitely go back - I recommend giving it a try.

It is moderately priced, but in my opinion v. good value for money.
