1/2 price pizza Thurday evenings
That's half price dine in. No take-out special or if you order a medium like I did and take some leftovers home it's full price.
Lots of diners and lots of pizzas being served. Good quality, a notch below Louis and Colonnade.
Busy spot, real diner atmosphere

Terrible service, an abomination and a disgrace to diner's
I was just in Al's Diner no more than 10 minutes ago came around 7 am May 18th 2011 and had breakfast and I have to say I wasn't too pleased with the service I recieved. The waitress, not sure her name but she's the older one with the black hair, crabby looks and attitude. Basically, she got my order wrong not once but twice. I ordered a ham and cheese omelette with home fries, white toast, sausage and orange juice. Not too long after she brings me my order and I begin to eat it. Much to my dismay, I notice that my omelette is not a ham and cheese omelette but a mushroom omelette. I stop eating my breakfast and she eventually comes back around with the bill in hand assuming I was finished like she was in a hurry to get rid of me and I informed her that I asked for a ham and cheese omelette where she says and I quote *yea, thats what I brought you* when clearly there was mushrooms all over the omelette and no ham or cheese in sight... then I said *no you didnt, you brought me a mushroom omelette.... I would like a new breakfast please* she says *sure*. Not much later she comes back with my new breakfast and doesnt even appologize for the inconvenience, she pretty much just rudely drops it in front of me and doesnt even say a word. Then I notice mistake number 2, she brought me the correct omelette this time but I get brown toast instead of white toast when I specifically had white toast on my plate the first time. At this point Im fed up already and I let that one go, so I just finish my breakfast and ask for my bill while Im eating. When I finished, I get up with my bill to go pay near the bar, the bill came up to 15.33$ so I handed her a 20$ bill, while shes fishing for change from her pouch she asks me *how do you think the Senators are going to do tonight* in which I replied *Im not sure, I dont care much for hockey* by that time she hands me my change and walks away, then I noticed that she short-changed me 1$ and hands me 3.50$. Noticing this right away, I flag her down right away and point out her mistake, her excuse was she thought one of the quarters was a loonie and that was the reason why she short-changed me. I was not impressed nor did I believe this excuse, even if this were true, she still would have been short-changing me, clearly her math skills and brain cells are lacking.

Now the way I see it, she knew she had messed up my order and was trying to make a buck off me anyway despite her errors because she obviously knew that I wouldnt tip her for the mistakes, and I wasnt going to, so sensing this she tried to divert my attention by asking me that question about the Senators thinking I wouldnt notice that she was about to rip me off, which is very underhanded and sneaky. I find it very hard to believe that a veteran waitress cant tell the difference between a quarter and a loonie since they handle change and deal with people all day long. If she had gotten my order right the first time I would have given her the whole 20$ and this review would have never been composed and there wouldnt have been a problem. After she hands me my correct change I say to her before I left, *maybe you should start writing your orders down* which she failed to do relying on memory alone, she said nothing and didnt even acknowledge me, perhaps she was too embarrased to respond because she knew I was right. I didnt appreciate this kind of service from someone so incompetent, her rudeness and lack of concern was also appalling, the least she could have done at that point was say she was sorry but I didnt even get that. If her memory is that bad, she should be writing down EVERY order, maybe management/ownership should see to this or better yet, terminate her employment. I can just imagine how many orders she messes up let alone try to scam people out of their change each day in this manner and it going unnoticed, consider yourself informed once and for all. I definitely wont be coming back if this is the quality of people Al's Diner employs.

Back for Breakfast
Last week we tried Al's main competition, the Studebaker Pub just down the street. So I was actively comparing the two experiences we had at breakfast.

Similar circumstances as last week, smallish (6) family gathering. I went with the Montreal Eggs Benedict, it was nice they offered a different variety of Eggs Bennie, this one came with smoked meat in place of ham. I resented the fact that they charged extra for potatoes though. The breakfast itself about 1.50 more expensive than down the street, with the potato "upgrade" it was close to 4 bucks more here.

The smoked meat on the Benedict worked, it was pretty darn tasty. I didn't like the hollandaise sauce here. I'm guessing it's the Knorr powdered stuff, it had very strong taste to it. It was alot heavier and had a chalky aftertaste too. The meal was definitely saltier, the breakfast potatoes were spiced and salted heavily.

Service here was not as good as at Studebakers. Although our food came quickly we were gently "encouraged" to vacate our table, the waitress stood over us while relaxed and conversed. To be clear, we weren't there for an hour gabbing away, I doubt the entire time from when we sat down to when we left did not exceed 40 minutes. I realize she's trying to make a living and getting people in and out is how she's going to earn more tips, but we felt far more relaxed and welcome at the place down the road.

Al\'s Hits it
A great breakfast and lunch place just off Carling ave across from the brand new Canadian Tire. A solid breakfast with good portions, fast friendly service and the owners are usually on site. The lunch specials are usually a great value, filled with variety. Al\'s always goes over and above for thier customers and once you get into the foundation of this diner you are usually hooked..

Good breakfast spot
I've been to Al's diner quite a few times for breakfast, almost always on weekends, and overall it's a satisfying experience. Healthy portions of good quality food. I always get the pancakes- more recently the blueberry pancakes. My only concern is that more often than not, they arrive cold, or at least not as warm as I'd like. I don't understand this, as I'm rarely sitting far from the kitchen. Also, a little ice in my water would be nice. The service is usually good, although I get the odd waitress who forgets/neglects little things, (cutlery, pancakes on separate plate), but they're usually smiling and eager to correct their mistakes. I was hooked on this place after my first visit, and will keep going back.

Great all day breakfast
First visit to Al's Diner after reading about them on RestaurantThing.com. Breakfast was fantastic. Huge portions, home fries were perfect, crunchy and well seasoned. Pancakes were fluffy. My toast was a little over-done, but I've come to expect that as standard at diners. I would have liked the option to upgrade to real maple syrup, but apart from that I was very pleased with my meal, and will definitely be going back (soon).

good for breakfast, but there is better out there
I've had breakfasts here on numerous occasions, and the consistent thing is that the service is always really good. The food is consistently good too, and that is why our group of friends returns there on a very regular basis.

However, I do have a few complaints/warnings - first of all, the orange juice is priced ridiculously! I love a big cold glass of oj on a weekend morning, and if i order it and it comes quick, and the actual food is delayed, I may need to order a second one. Well let me tell ya, thats about an $8 proposition right there, 2 juices. So be careful.

Also, don't show up to eat to close to 'closing time' (which is fairly early, they don't open for dinner, or at least they don't on weekends), because they may squeeze you in, but you'll know they're closing soon, and will treat you like that. Thats happened twice to me.

And finally, DO NOT order the fruit salad. Its not a bowl of freshly cut fruit! Its basically like that crappy tinned stuff, with the sugar water that its been sitting in for months, probably out of a can or something, produced long ago. Thats unfortunate, because how hard is it REALLY to make a small bowl of a few pieces of fresh cut fruit, like other restaurants do (Cora's comes to mind of course). But thats fine, they do other things really well (pancakes, french toast, eggs, bacon) so its ok. Just be warned.

Overall, a decent place, huge TVs, good atmosphere, amazing staff, and really good food, priced more or less decently. I recommend it.

Great Breakfast For As Long As I Remember
I've lived near this restaurant since I was a little kid and I've been for breakfast many, many times.
Many, many times because it's always consistently great.
You don't go to Al's expecting healthy, gourment food; you go there for a very comfortable atmosphere, friendly service and greasy (yummy) food.
The service is fast and the waitresses are only ever in good moods. Mind you, I've never gone on the weekend when no doubt it's the busiest.
It is what it is, and I highly recommend it.

Fantastic greasy spoon breakfast, unbeatable price, lightning speed service. Once the staff recognizes you as a repeater, they take the time to get to know you and remember your name.

As another poster said, this is a true "Greasy Spoon". It's great when you're looking for a filling, greasy breakfast, but aren't looking to eat healthy or to count calories.

The wait staff are fairly abrupt and don't really stand around to chit-chat. However, they're efficient and get you your food quickly...even if they're not extremely friendly and polite while doing so.

This is a true city greasy spoon, brilliant breakfast when you go in appreciating it for what it is: a diner, and not a place where you can order birdseed and plain yogurt. I've never been for dinner, but I can say that Al's is always packed for their cheap weekend breakfast and i've been many times. Service is fast, waitresses are always friendly and chatty, i half expect them to call me sugar pie. Its a charming place for what it is, straight forward, no punches. Plus you can go in your sweat pants on a Sunday morning and no one will even pay you a second glance.

We always enjoy the food and the waiter is always friendly and fast. Usually a nice atmosphere, but last time we were there, people who identified themselves as the "owner's family" told another patron that they could make as much noise as they wanted which included their kids running up and down the restaurant. Staff obviously didn't intervene. Not exactly peaceful that night. Any other time though, its been great.

This is an old restaurant, and should really kick up their socks when it comes to the grade of beef they are using, you can't tell me that it's AAA. Too expensive for what you get.

For a diner, AL's is great. The owner is also great and cares about his customers, he was willing to open up on a Sunday night so about 20 or so of us could have a little holiday get together at a very reasonable price.

A breakfast for $3.25, and not worth any more. Truckstop style. Usual greaseball routine. Try Cora's on Merivale for something more upscale and healthier. Service is pleasant and fast. Heard the pizza was good, can it beat KS Restaurant though?

I go to Al's for breakfast once every few months. They have a good "breakfast special" including all the fixin's and coffee for <$3.00. Quality and food are good and it's a nice diner in a blue collar working area (auto parts, repairs, etc.)
