Garbage!
Perhaps the worst slop I've ever eaten. Not to mention the place is filthy, the wall behind us was yellowed and had food splatter on it. Come on, what kind of "Chinese" buffet has french fries and pizza on it? Avoid this pigsty with all means possible.

Bad food
I don' t know if the food served on week-ends is any better but it was bad this Wednesday evening. Barely warm, most of the dishes tasted mediocre at best. At 17$ per person, the food is not worth the price. I would not go back even if it cost half as much.

Still the same as I remembered...
It has been a while since I have been to Yang Ming, but friends wanted Chinese, and felt that a buffet would be more value for their money. At $17.00, I felt that even though it was an all you can eat, the options and quality of food were not anything exciting.

I usually run for the meat dishes, such as the BBQ pork, and general tao's chicken, but they were not as flavorful or exciting as I once remembered at Yang Ming. Most dishes were lukewarm, and most deep fried items that were not soaked in sauce were hard as a rock. The one thing that disappointed me was the lack of desert selection at dinner time. A couple pieces of cake left over from maybe the lunch crowd? No baklava this time, (maybe it got too costly for this restaurant to carry?) The fruit was good, minus a couple of hairs that I found on them.

The service was great as usual, lots of water refills. The place can use a good cleaning, I noticed that some of the dishes were dirty at the buffet station, maybe they just got missed by the dishwasher?

In my opinion, this buffet used to be the best in west Ottawa, but things change, and it is definitely not worth trying out again.

FIRST TIME VISTING THIS BUFFET... NOT IMPRESSED!
Okay, so my fiance and I went to the 4:00 pm dinner buffet and when we got there everything seemed t be okay. We were seated and then we got up to go and get our food. As for myself my food was cold and it was supposed to be hot. The fries were cold, onion rings were old tasting and cold, the huge rack of beef ribs were cold and undercooked, the spring rolls were not very good at all. The prok ribs were ok (a little overdone though). The vegetables were fine. As for the dessert well the ice cream had almost completely melted in it's metal buckets, they had two different types of jello, two pastries and a cake that looked like it was doused in liquid caramel(didn't look appealing at all)... That was all they had for dessert.. Overall my experience there was not very good... As for my fiance he wasn't impressed either.
As for today, I have nothing but diarrhea and a gurgling stomach...
So it's safe to say that I won't be going back there anytime soon!

Yoy have to be in the mood for a Chinese buffet . . .
You have to be in the mood for a Chinese buffet and as an American, it compares quite well to those I've been to in Mass. and FLA. I love the chicken wings, various chicken dishes, green beans, ribs, fried rice and egg foo yung. I've never had the salad or desert items. My wife likes the fish items. They need to spend some money cleaning the dirt off the furniture, carpet and walls. I would put this aspect as below par. The service is hit or miss. Although, most of the Mom & Pop Chinese restaurants in Ottawa are awful and you feel like they've spent years figuring out how to give you the lowest possible value. But I digress, overall thumbs up. The turnover keeps the food fresh & hot & lots of Asian people eat there. Of the 6-8 times I've been there, it is generally always consistent. I like it more than my wife and daughter however.

Pretty good buffet
I've been here twice and my most recent visit was Saturday night. My boyfriend's parents took us here. The place was crazy busy, but we were able to get a table within less than 5 minutes of arriving.

The buffet has a pretty decent selection. The food is always fresh due to the amount of people that are constantly dining. Everything I ate was very good, accept for the eggrolls. They were way too salty for my liking. Otherwise it all very good, even their sushi rolls were good!

My only knock is that the seating is too tight. People walking in the back towards our table were bumping into me. They are trying to cram too many tables with the space that they have.

Otherwise, it was pretty good!

An Awful Experience
I tried to keep a positive attitude going in, especially after reading other reviews online. In the end, I was pretty disappointed. The restaurant was crowded and dirty, and the service was slow. When someone finally did ask us if we wanted drinks, we’d already been there for some time.

The food was bland and uninspired, and it left my fiancée feeling sick before we’d left the restaurant. The selection was poor, and the dinnerware never appeared to be cleaned properly.

When we finally got our bill, we were charged for the wrong beverages, and it was far more expensive that I thought it should have been. If the food were better I’d understand, but in the end neither of us ate all that much due the poor quality.

I will definitely not be going back again.

Definitely a waste of money and a meal
The food served at Yang Ming Chinese Buffet is absolutely the lowest grade of Chinese food I have ever tasted. The egg rolls and chicken balls are over fried and hard – impossible to cut, and often served cold. The spring rolls are greasy, as are the onion rings. The other dishes served are tasteless, or overly salted. Just from the looks of the roast beef, I wouldn’t even try it. The plates are all scratched, and the cutlery is so worn down, that there are barely any ridges left on the knives. Surprisingly, the salad bar is fresh and offers a nice selection of vegetables. Regardless, it is definitely a waste of money and a meal.

Typical Canadian Chinese buffet.
This Chinese buffet has been around for almost two decades and goes through name changes as often as Jessica Simpson goes through boyfriends.

This place is pretty much average across the board. The service is average, the food is decent but not spectacular, the prices are where you would expect them to be and so forth. Despite all that, it remains a pretty busy spot for lunch on Merivale Road; only the Cora's next door might get more business.

If you have average expectations for this place, you won't be disappointed as everything they have is hot and decent and they have a large salad bar and dessert area. If you're looking for better, you won't find it here. Best time to come in would be before noon, after that, it gets pretty busy.

Nice selection
I love Chinese food - our Canadian idea of Chinese food, though. I'm not adventurous enough to try octopus or things like that. This restaurant impressed me with its selection: typical Canadian Chinese food (fried rice, chicken balls, etc) and more exotic fare.

The price is quite inexpensive considering it is a buffet. The quality of the food is quite high, as well. I went with a number of people and everybody left satisfied.

Good Chinese Buffet
It's a Chinese Buffet restaurant, so you get pretty much what you expect. They have a few more interesting choices, like steamed rice wraps and chicken feet, but mostly the usual chicken balls, egg rolls, steamed vegetables and so on. Large selection.

not bad for a buffet
For a $9 dollar lunch buffet how can one complain? A large choice of chinese food, both american style and more traditional items. A choice of salads, some suchi, fruit, cheap cookies, and the worst ice cream I have ever tasted . Also some non-chinese items like bacon and sausages.

Like one of the posters said it's a dollar more than Wendy's, so why not?

Decent, nothing spectacular.

i've been here a lot of times, it used to be a tradition wiht my parents when i was younger and i still come here sometimes

now the food isn't spectacular, but it's an AYCE buffet. if theres a few things u like just fill up on those. i eat tons of mussels, sushi/sashimi, imperial pork, skewered chicken, and wahtnot. the variety isn't all that great but it's fair price for all you can eat. 8.95 for lunch, man that's like a dollar more than a Wendy's meal, and you can stuff yourself till you can't move.

Couldn't get into Sakura as there was a 2 hr wait sooo....hit the buffet down the road...big mistake.
Walk in and were seated....a buffet in Ottawa with that many free tables at 6:30pm on a Saturday??!?! Ok...we are poured water and told enjoy...no drink order.
This place was DIRTY...had to look through the stacks of wet plates to find a cleanish one.
Reasonable selection of items...probably about 50 hot + the salad bar, 2 trays of surimi and california roll's and 3 types of desserts.
The food items were hit and miss...avoid the squid tentacles, BBQ pork & dessert cream puff.
All in all...too bad Sakura was so busy...should have made a reservation.
I guess that tells me why so slow on a Saturday night.
We wont be going back.

Yang Ming is good food for the price offered. Though some comments deem the restaurant expensive, it's not at all compared to authentic Chinese restaurants. Yang Ming has many tasty dishes, though I would not recommend the sushi. The servers are prompt and friendly. The black bean chicken is delicious, as well as the crab.

Firstly replied to this >>>Trust me, if you ask any Chinese restaurant whether they use MSG and they say no...and after awhile you get that distinctive 'burning' sensation in your throat...they flat out lied to you.

I think I know what that is, it's not MSG that caused your throat burning, it's the carbonated oil. When the oil is not fresh/over burnt while food cooked in it, that's how your throat would felt when you eat the food. MSG only makes you thirsty. Another one that may cause your throat burning is probably preservatives.

The taste of the food is actually good, but it very depends on the timing. If you go in around 9 p.m., that's it, you'll mostly walk out frowning after the meal, it happend sometimes to me. But if you go there around 6 p.m., that's a different experience.

Some of the deep fried/stir fried food do cause soarthroat, but the BBQ pork, lemon chicken, they are pretty good! However I don't really recommend their sashimi...

I have been here about four times over the years and none of the visits were impressive.
The selection is very limited and there are some items that are not very appetizing at all.
They have a salad bar that seems better than the regular food.
Worst of all, someone should sick the MSG police on this place...they are perhaps the biggest users of that stuff I have ever encountered.
I am sensitive to MSG and when a restaurant uses a lot of it on their food, I can literally feel my throat closing up.
Trust me, if you ask any Chinese restaurant whether they use MSG and they say no...and after awhile you get that distinctive 'burning' sensation in your throat...they flat out lied to you.

I am disappointed that we don't have even a single Chinese buffet restaurant like those in Toronto (e.g., Buffet King). Yang Ming is okay and agree that the food quality is better than Du Barry. However, when I took my colleages there for lunch, they seem to like the food since the price is okay to them. Services were okay and our plates got changed very frequently.

Superb (420.10)

I was shopping at Nicastro's on Merivale and I decided to try this place out for lunch. To be fair, I wasn't really expecting much for a chinese buffet place (what was it? $8.99?) The food was o.k. and the dim sum selection was acceptable - keep in mind, if you want better chinese food or better dim sum, then you will have to go to a place like Yangtze on Somerset or Imperial Palace on Dalhousie and have the dim sum from the cart or order a dish from the menu - but for a buffet I found it no better or worse than DuBarry or the place at the corner of Bank and Hunt Club. I did enjoy one of their dishes: black bean chicken did have lots of black bean sauce - which i like! so i would rate this place just slightly higher than DuBarry but slightly lower in terms of quantity as Dubarry has more items - but chinese buffets aren't really my thing!

I got confused by the name for a second. Yang Tze is in Chinatown. Like others mentioned, it says Yang Ming at the store sign. The food is decent at best. I really don't have much to say about it b/c the food wasn't that great. If you want to experience a chinese buffet, I recommend Du Berry's on Montreal rd. near the Vanier area. I realize it's on the opposite end of the city, but if you're reading this, then most likely you're willing to try new places. As a pure buffet style restaurant, Du Berrys > Yang Ming.

Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else! With mixed reviews from previous raters (under the wrong name) we, optimistically, hoped for the best. We had driven past several times and had seen quite a lot of cars in the parking lot, so we thought that perhaps the raters that had previously left negative comments had exaggerated. Believe us, they were right!

We will never return to this restaurant! The selections ranged down from very mediocre to just plain awful. We returned to the buffet tables several times and tried EVERY main course dish (i.e. meat/fish/chicken etc.)and did not find even one that was acceptable, even when freshly replenished and hot from the kitchen! And don't even think about taking something from a serving pan after it has been out for awhile. In those cases the food was not only horrible, it was often cold, tough, or inedible.

The dinner service on Saturday (when we went) starts at 4pm. We arrived a little before 6pm and the restaurant was about half full. It wasn't long before the restaurant filled up and when we left there was even quite a number of people in line waiting for tables! Either those people have the shockingly lowest culinary standards of what is acceptable restaurant fare or they were all going there for the first time like we were. We can't imagine anyone that would ever return for a second visit!

On top of the poor food.....it was NOT cheap! The total for two people for dinner was $35. That did not include any drinks as we had just water and did not include tip which was additional. The only thing good here was the service. The waiter took the dirty plates away whenever we returned to the buffet line (which was often since we didn't eat much and kept returning to search for something worth eating) and kept our water glasses filled very well.

So...I really dislike leaving negative comments but feel that, especially in this case, it is a public service to warn others not to waste their time or money at this restaurant.

You've been warned!

This *used* to be the best Chinese buffet in Ottawa. I think it might be under new management now, and it's just not the same. We were there yesterday for what will probably be our last time. Specifically, they're stingy and slow with putting out favourite dishes. I think they're trying to wring the most out of the restaurant's long-standing reputation while cutting costs at the expense of diners' enjoyment. I expect to see them either change management again soon or fold. Too bad! They used to be the best.

There is no place called Yang Tze buffet - the buffet in the Emerald Plaza is actually called Yang Ming. Went for dinner on a Saturday, not too crowded and a good selection of food. The shrimp skewers were yummy, as were the chicken wings. Some of the food items could have been replaced a bit quicker. We were pleasantly surprised to find baklava at the dessert table, it was quite good. They definitely need to find a place to hide all their beer crates though.

For people who like buffets you will like this one

Is this the one in Emerald Plaza on Merivale Rd.? There is sometimes sushi there, and dim sum stuff. I heard that the previous owner lost this restaurant to the current owner by gambling!
