Wow
Visited this restaurant w/ family member. First off -- this isn't a meal, it's an experience. You've got to settle in for a good 3-4 hours and enjoy. We decided to do the wine pairing, for the full shebang.
Food is out of this world. It's a 12-course tasting menu, and they check with you ahead of time to ensure no allergies, etc. Each dish is carefully thought out, with spices, foam, flavoured purees of fruit or vegetables -- perfectly matched with the accompanying wine, beer, port. Particuarly highlights -- prosciutto and swordfish with melon & spices, fennel with different accents, their version of nachos and beer (which, as I understand it, is beer superheated so it forms curly strands, interspersed with cheeses, shallots, and other spices, the aptly named "liver damage" which was an incredible cold foie gras with dandelion honey. The two "main" dishes were an oxtail tortelloni w/ brown butter hollandaise, radish and mushroom, and an elk in tarragon. Dessert followed - passion fruit mousse, banana meringue...everything was fantastic from start to finish. Wines - from a prosecco to a barolo with an oak aged beer and a port thrown in - were excellent. It's a total evening experience -- you certainly couldn't (and wouldn't!) eat like that every day - but to go out and be blown away by the whole "food as art" concept -- it's really something else.

Gastronomy and Fantastic Taste Experience
dinner @ atelier was the most creative cuisine i've tried in ottawa. kudos to originality, execution, taste, temperature and presentation! the chefs (or should be called alchemists) raise the bar high on edgy cuisine with mind blowing taste and texture combinations. NOTE: atelier is a blind tasting menu. you are presented with unknown dishes and given the menu at the end. every dish revealed out of the kitchen was greeted with anticipation, surprise and extreme curiosity. dishes kept getting better and better with taste experience all over the place with the different dishes! atelier is not a place for kids, fussy eaters or rookie foodies. this is a place for those who want to take risks and discover edgy culinary arts to stimulate your taste sensations and develop your mental palate. the atelier experience means something different and unique to everyone. you definitely make your own sense out of it all! taste separation and mixing with the opportunity for you to mix the flavors in the plate or enjoy them separately as you see fit. the atelier experience will prove to be a narcotic and rewardingly addictive!

i've been to many tasting restaurants and this place is inspired from the famous Alinea restaurant, with some El Bulli, perhaps Nobu. in my travels, Atelier marks a great new addition to the ottawa scene.

i'm hoping the menu changes frequently to inspire more frequent returns!

Service came up short
A friend of mine really wanted to try Atelier so we went there for dinner recently.

The food was interesting and varied, their scallops and bison were fantastic. Unfortunately the service was so slow that it took almost 4 hours for dinner and their small plates could not catch up with our hunger. We picked up take-out on the way home.

I could not figure out which of the two waiters on staff was assigned to our table, one of my pet peeves. The difficulty of deciding how to tip when served by multiple people was thankfully not an issue since I found them both pretentious and wordy.

The wine flight offered seemed to be based on their wish to impress with obscurity rather than successful food and wine pairing.

Overall, with a price tag well over 100 dollars per head, the food adds up, the wine pairings were disappointing and the service came up short. I hope that it was just an off night for them but I will never return.

a fun and creative night out
Atelier is a lot of fun. It's perhaps not the right choice for the super picky, but for people with a good sense of fun and adventure when it comes to food, I highly recommend it. The food is beautifully presented and it's such a nice relaxing change to let the chef be in the driver's seat. The restaurant offers a 12 course blind tasting menu, using the most modern and sustainable cooking techniques. I loved 9 of 12 of the courses (misses were the first two courses, and the last course) (overall, this is pretty good, considering I'm actually surprisingly picky). The bison is pretty much the best thing I've ever tasted, with the scallop course coming in at a close second. I don't want to spoil the surprise of eating there, but I can say that if you want a fun evening out with a food-loving companion, you can't go wrong here. We also opted for the wine pairing (first time I've ever done so) and it was great. I tried varietals and drinks I never would have tried, and they paired beautifully with the food. The sommelier is very charming as well. Highly recommend this restaurant. It's not inexpensive (bill for two, with wine pairing, including tax and tip was about $330), but it's totally worth it. :)
