AMAZING
We went to Malaysia for business and were treated to many traditional dishes while there. It was a delight to go to the Chahaya Malaysia and discover we could find the same amazing taste and traditional dishes here in Canada. The only sad thing was our desire to travel back to Malaysia due to all the nostalgia!! Oh well, at least we have a little bit of Malaysia within our grasp. Thank you so much for a truly delightful meal.

Chicken Curry
I have only tried a few items on the menu, and the lunch buffet, but now I am a regular there for #14 Chicken Curry. This is one of the best asian dishes I have ever eaten. The staff there are very friendly, and the service is decent. Enjoy Taylor.

A delicious meal with very friendly staff. As an appetizer, I had the Spicy Thai Soup and my partner tried the Spring Roll. Both were good, and the spiciness of the soup pushed my heat tolerance limits - exactly what I had hoped for. My partner is allergic to shell fish, and our server was very accomodating to that bringing him garlic chips to snack on instead of the complimentary shrimp chips that are generally served.
For mains, we tried the Chef's Special Chicken and the Beef Rendang Java. I prefered the flavours of the beef, and I was hoping that the chicken would have had more heat to it - next time we will ask for more spice. We each had a bowl of traditional rice, and skipped dessert on this visit.
Our bill came to just over $50 for our food, an iced tea and a beer. We will definitely go back.

Worth the trip
This restaurant came recommended by friends so two of us went for Friday supper.
The menu had an interesting array of Indonesian and Malaysian food, and our hosts were more than happy to give recommendations based on our interests.
The fish in coconut sauce was excellent as was the shrimp. Definitely worth the trip from downtown and worth another visit.

Amazing!
We frequently visit the restaurant, and it has become a must for us to take visitors and friends. Everytime we go, the food is exceptional and the service personable. We always learn a bit more about Malaysian culture and food, and love how the Malaysian tea is served (quite unique!).

Delicious, authentic Malaysian/Indonesian food
My friend and I go regularly to Chahaya Malaysia for lunch. We enjoy their buffet which offers a chicken dish in a delicious sauce, the meat so moist it melts in your mouth; a tasty and tender beef dish; a mixed vegetable stir-fry; a noodle dish; a clear soup (usually chicken, sometimes lamb) and vegetable spring rolls that for me are the highlight of the meal. These spring rolls are cooked in small batches and regularly replenished in the buffet so they are always spanking hot and crisp. There's steamed rice and pita slices to soak up the flavourful sauces. For those who like their food extra hot, there is on the table a jar of homemade chili sauce to spice up your very satisfying meal.
The servers make sure we have a constant supply of iced water.
The dinner menu is varied and helpful advice as to choice of dishes is always willingly given.
This restaurant is family owned and they're proud of their quality. I wouldn't let any unfair and small-minded mean comments by any disgruntled person stop you from going in to experience a wonderful meal.

Back again, July 2009
It had been a while since my last trip here, but was in the neighborhood and hungry and felt like something different.
Busy early on a weekday night but they had a table no problem. First time being there on a really busy night and wow, the aroma from the kitchen is great.
The veg spring rolls remain as good as remembered. Possibly better.
A 'rojak' salad is less impressive - basically a plate of un-tossed apples, sprouts, cold tofu and canned pineapple with sweetened soy sauce. The description made it sound exotic but the delivery was bleh. Nothing 'wrong' with it, but wouldn't order again.
Chicken curry dish (i'm not going to even pretend to remember the Malaysian/Indonesian names but they are easy enough to spot on the menu) was good- tasty, nicely different from the Indian or Chinese equivalents, good portion with enough chicken in it.
Spicy beef dish was also good. Thick sauce, ample meat, less veg, nice kick.
Veg wheat noodle dish was excellent. Good kick at the 'medium hot' rating with nice amount of veg and tasty noodles. Really showcases the Indonesian spices.
Service was friendly, timely and prompt. Water refills brought, empties removed.
An aside, I go here for the good/different food. It's not a place to go for the atmosphere - tired paint and worn carpets do nothing good for this place that is otherwise pleasant dining and original for Ottawa - i just hesitate to bring guests, notwithstanding the good food and service.
Prices are fair - slightly higher per dish than say, the average Indian or Chinese food restaurant but worth it for something different.
Will be back, will send others.

Will never go again - Rude Waitress
Will never go here again. The "lady" (owner's wife/waitress) pushed one of the customers entirely without initiation. Read full details below.
Today was our second trip to Chahaya Malaysia. We had my sister and her family of husband and two kids visiting us from Toronto. My sister had a craving for Asian food and so we decided to take her here. We reached the place around 8 and indeed it was pretty crowded. We were a family of 6 (4 adults, two kids) and my sister was concerned about the kids falling asleep. First we had two wait about 20 minutes at the door despite the lady knowing we were standing there, and despite there being at least two places right in front of us where we could sit. After that, another bus boy (who was just hired) came and took us right to the back of the room to this table in the far left corner that is almost hidden (you can't see or call the waiter). We then waited again, for about another 15 minutes. Meanwhile, the lady came and served all the tables around us, didn't even serve us water or chips like they usually do, or even pay attention to us. In order to get a better view of the room and to see if the other waiter was less busy, I moved back in my chair, momentarily ending up on two legs of the chair. The lady came and without warning, without saying a word, pushed me in with force and went to another table. My wife and my jaws dropped! We couldn't believe what had just happened. She then came over a few seconds later while we were talking about leaving and said, "I'm not ignoring you just so you know". To which I replied, "I know you're not, but there's a way. You just pushed me! If I was in your way you could have said 'Excuse Me' and I would have moved". I was totally calm and not rude even at this point. To this she said sarcastically, "Excuse me sir!" and left. We had obviously had it at this point and got up to leave. She gave me a look when going out as if I was the one being inconsiderate to which I said, "For someone who is in the service business, you're pretty horrible!". She replied, "You were rocking my chair sir". I didn't reply and walked off. When we were leaving there was another party waiting at the door.
Now I know that this restaurant has already established a name for itself and they know that no matter how they serve or treat people, people will come. So they don't care and disrespect people. If she was an employee, she would have been fired long time back.
We had a bad experience the first time around as well, when she insulted my wife saying, "You're not at a chinese restaurant!", when all my wife had asked was "Do you have something with nuts?".
We ignored and went back coz we thought the food was decent. But the only thing good here is the chef special chicken, and even that's not worth the bad service.

Excellent
I often enjoy the buffet lunch - particularly the best spring rolls I've ever had anywhere. Dinner is even better. Good food, well prepared, comfortable dining, frank and honest service.

Most of the dishes were very flavourful and tasty – I really enjoyed the sweet and sour fish, and the chicken in a garlic sauce. Some of the dishes were lacklustre, for example the curried shrimp and the veggie tofu dish. The tofu pieces tasted like they had been cooked, then reheated for the dish - this resulted in tough little pieces. Also, there were hardly any other vegetables pieces in the dish. The spring rolls are massive, and were kind of greasy, so I wouldn’t order that again. I would probably return for the sweet and sour fish alone – very tasty. Service was prompt and efficient. The parking in this location is painfully small.

Great Meal
I recently went for the lunch buffet and both the food and the service were exceptional. This has become one of my favourite restaurants since moving to Ottawa. The wait staff is always friendly and helpful. The food is very flavourful.
We enjoying dining there as often as possible, and I am in the habit of ensuring that both my colleagues and visitors share this culinary delight.

Chahaya Malaysia - still great after many years
Chahaya Malaysia has been around for years and the food and service are consistently good, in part because the owners are the ones doing the work themselves.
Usually I've gone for the buffet at noon. Some days are busier than others and Fridays are often busy because government workers from NRC, CSIS, CMHC etc love the place and can get a quick meal there and then get back to work.
The food is great - and things like the spring rolls disappear quickly (but are promptly re-filled). Some of the food is a bit hot for me occasionally but the rice, noodles, pita bread, shrimp chips - and of course, water serve to moderate the more spicy things. They've been doing great work now for 23 years and I hope that they continue in business for many more.

Worth the trip
I didn't quite know what to expect the first time I visited this restaurant, and I was a bit skeptical. But it has quickly become one of my favourite places to eat. It's my definition of comfort food, it always hits the spot. And the price is unmatched.
Being past St. Laurent it's a bit of a trip, but it's always worth it. I hit the buffet mostly, and am never disappointed with the selection they have. (My favourite being the curry chicken, rice, noodles, and spring rolls.) I eat more at this buffet than almost any other. It's just so consistently tasty.
I've never had a problem with the service, I find the owners to be nice, hard-working, and helpful with any questions about the food.
I fully recommend this restaurant, when I'm not there I'm thinking about the next time I'm going to be there!

A poor experience
I recently took a group of 10 people to this restaurant for the lunch buffet. The majority of the people really enjoyed the food, and yes the beef dishes are very good. I am accustomed to Asian foods, and thought the taste to be very authentic, or as close as they can be. The only complaint we all shared was the quality of service. The older woman that served us was a real treat (extreme sarcasim). She was rude from the moment we all walked in, she spilled water on one of my collegees and was not appologetic, but cursed under her breath, and argued with another for a beer he had ordered, but never received which she billed him for. It is a shame that the food is so good, as usually good food can draw crowds on its own, but because of the quality of service, they will suffer. This place needs to hire professional waiting staff.

Good Malayasian Place
1. Singapore/Malaysian/Indonesian Places are hard to come by, nearest places would in Toronto and Montreal.
2. For a family style, family operated resturant this place is not bad at all, this is by no mean fine dining but the portions are large and the food tasty.
3. It is not 100% what you find in stores in the homeland but its close enough, everyone has their own style and in Ottawa the client base is not enough to go 100% euthentic. This is as good as it gets here.
4.The satay is as good as it gets around here, some people find it not the same as back home, well thats because its breast meat... duh.... Its better than any thai or malaysian place here or in Toronto.
5. Remmember the style here is not Nonya..singapore/malayasian food which is cooked basically by chinese people, fusion with malay styles falvours that sort of thing.
5. What you get is sort of home style malay cooking.
6. So no comparing with Nonya in chinatown NYC for example, or Rest Malaysia in Richmond Hill (which has gone bad)
I would def recommend this place is you are into Malay food.

Wonderful experience
Chahaya Malaysia was my first time trying malaysian, but certainly not my last. The lunch buffet was very tasty with a nice selection of dishes. I enjoyed every bite- starting with soup which had a really nice mixture of flavours to the tea that we ended the meal with (the fancy pour was a wonderful touch).
I will be back!

A Savory Experience
Since being introduced by a group of friends last year, Chahaya Malaysia has become one of the few local restaurants that I genuinely crave. We regularly trek from the Glebe and Westboro to enjoy their delicious and savory buffet. As mentioned the buffet is limited in terms of dished offered but the exceptional quality of the food makes every visit a delightful one. Amazing how famous and popular those spring rolls are? Though not at all overrated, they are absolutely deeeeelicious! If you have time definitely take the time to enjoy the traditional malay sweet tea. Served piping hot and poured in an entertaining fashion, it's the perfect digestif!

I'm there 3 times a week!
I love this place. Not for the owners (although they are very conscientious and caring), not for the décor, not for the location and not for the accessibility. The food is awesome. Great flavours, great selection and great range of spices.
I’m a bit of a hothead (pepper-wise) so I love my food with spice. Chahaya Malaysia provides radically different tastes, textures and exotic ingredients that you’re not going to find elsewhere. And the Shrimp based soup is to die for!
If you like exotic or something off the beaten path you’ve got to try it. Quite often I’ve sat down and simply asked Margaret or Boody to “feed me”. I’m never disappointed.
And as for the Boody/Margaret comments, hey… they own the business and they’re not shy to tell you how it is. If they’ve had a rough week, they don’t give you that superficial smile and the perfunctory “everything’s peachy” thing. You’ll know exactly what’s up. They take pride in their restaurant and they’re not afraid to make you part of that family.
So enjoy. You too will be bringing your friends to try one of Ottawa’s most unique establishments.

Come for great malay food and
If you have read any of the previous review, you'll get a pretty good idea of the quality of food, and type of service to expect. Which clearly is a strong indicator of consistency. The best Malaysian food available given the strict resources available in Ottawa.
And as always, "The Lady". If you remove the bitterness, and head teacher attitude - she's actually a great person to talk to. I often ended up speaking to her for a very long period of time after I've finished. Just remember not to interrupt her while she's explains to you about Malaysian food. And yes, she does know what she's talking about, and really just wants to educate you about Malaysian food. Don't expect her to be fired anytime soon, as she's the chef's wife, and has many life experiences to share. Unlike many other restaurants, you will not find indifference here.
Bitterness aside, the flavouring, use of spice, and quality of food is top notch. I've even had a chance to test out some of the chef's attempts at a new fish plate, which was good. I'm sure he's perfected it by now.
This is truly another treasure in Ottawa, and if you come with the knowledge of what to expect, and prepared for "The Lady", then you can expect a great time, and great food, and new knowledge about Malaysian food.
Also, if you just want a taste of everything - there's the lunch Buffet.
Cheers!

Wonderful experience
I truly enjoyed dining at Chahaya Malaysia. I visit frequently and have never been disappointed. I recommend a reservation on a Friday or Saturday night just incase, although the food is definately worth ANY wait! I thoroughly enjoy their Chicken Curry, Beef Beryani and Lamb Kurma (some of my favourites). If you're taking friends who do not eat spicy, I'd get the Javanese Fried Chicken, or Chef's Special Chicken but mild, good for kids too! Make sure to try a spring roll, it is SO good with the chilli sauce on the table, but believe them when they tell you things are hot, they are really hot!
The waitress/co-owner serves us frequently when we go, and after talking to her myself, and seeing her interacting with other customers, I do not have a complaint in the world. She is kind, friendly, funny, and an overall wonderful person it seems to me. All the other wait staff is also very friendly, including the other co-owner.
This restaurant gets a good rating from me, I would recommend it to anyone. Don't be scared to try Malay food, it is deelish! =)

Great food - not enough wait staff
The food was tasty - it's wonderful to see fish cooked well (haddock curry was fantastic).
But the restaurant did not have enough wait staff on hand - 3 servers for a packed Saturday night with people lined up the door and one very large group (a large table with a family birthday with about 15 people sitting together). We made reservations also, and were put off by the ridiculously slow service. Waited probably 20 minutes to get dessert menus after our plates were cleared, and then never saw the waiter again for another 20- ended up leaving without dessert just to get out of there.

Best spring rolls in the city!
Delicious, spicy and oh-so-aromatic Malaysian food. Wonderful service with a personal touch. And nice Upper Canada Dark beer to wash it all down...ahhhh!
The spring rolls are to die for (I once had 6 - which is probably 3 too many, but what a way to go ;-)
One thing that puzzles me, though, is why so many people think this place is expensive...Baccara, Beckta, Merlot, Fougères - now THAT'S expensive! Chahaya is actually very INexpensive - downright cheap (and I mean that as a big compliment). The quality and quantity of the food you get (especially at the lunch buffet) for the price you pay is excellent, a real deal, and worth every penny.

the food is really delicious and they will cater the spiciness and ingredients if you have any food allergies. problem is the smallish portion sizes for the price. i have gone here several times even though i find it priced a bit high because the food is good and quite unique in ottawa.

Fantastic
Excellent food. The beef Rendang is HOT but oh so flavourful. Pairs nicely with the rado rado salad and Malaysian rice.
Might be the best springrolls in the city. Only issue is that the service can be a little slow.

Spreading the word
I love this place. I keep bringing new people to it, then they bring others to it and so on and so on.
I've been probably 30 times or so in the past year and get very good service every time. It's family owned, and the staff is very welcoming, recognizing you after a few visits.
I crave the Beef Rendang....I wake up sometimes with drool coming out of my mouth because I've been dreaming about it. The Chicken in Garlic Sauce and the Spring Rolls are also particularly noteworthy.
Mmmmm....

I've been to this restaurant a couple of times and the food has been great on all occasions. Every time the lady was there to serve us but one. I don't really understand why people complain about her as she was always nice, efficient and knowledgeable of the food. But maybe I always caught her on good days. The owner (I think) served us once and the service was a lot worse. He's extremely nice but the service was very slow.
I love the spring rolls at this place. The prices are also fair as the quality and quantity of the food is very good. The beef rendang is also extremely good I think.
I wish my girlfriend liked this place as much as me, I'd like to go more often...

tasty
Spring rolls excellent. Chef's special tofu, excellent. Malaysian broad wheat noodle dish with veggies and tofu-excellent. Very spicey. Appetizer with apples, tofu cucumber rojak dipping sauce-nice and refreshing but way over priced for what it is. Ice-cream dessert -next time I'll pass.

Been for lunch a few times and without exceptions the food has been excellent. The buffet selection is somewhat sparse but they do vary it. When the quality is this high the selection is not so important. The place is small and cosy and the staff courteous and knowledgeable. Definately a place to try!

It curried my favour
The waitress/owner was a bit chatty. I don't really care about the history of the restaurant. However she was knowlegeable about the food (she should be after 20 years or so).
I really enjoyed the food despite the inflated price. I will go back just to try other dishes but I'll stay away from the desserts (yuck).

March 16, 2007 - just got back from having dinner at this restaurant. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The staff was very friendly, helpful and insightful. Our food was delicious...but be careful, when they say it is hot, IT IS HOT! Try a small amount of the garlic chili/pepper sauce sitting on the table before you order anything. It is a good indication of some of the "heat" to come. I've been to restaurants where the wait staff have over exaggerated how hot something is...but in this circumstance, when they tell you it is hot, it is hot!
We were served by the wife/co-owner. I have to say, I was disappointed to read some of the other people's remarks about her. She is very pleasant, very knowledgeable and very courteous. We had a lovely conversation with her and the service she provided was noteworthy.
We highly recommend this restaurant!!

This is my favourite restaurant in the city. My work colleagues and I try to make the trek from Westboro at least once a week to enjoy the daily buffet, and the Malaysian Tea.
While the buffet only offers a small range of dishes, each is delectable, and I frequently wake up in the middle of a night craving the food.
In particular, the spring rolls are the best I've ever had. They are about 10" long, always nice and crispy and filled with fresh veggies that have not been over-cooked, making for a lovely filling texture as well. I use one of the lovely curries as dipping sauce for the spring rolls, and could happily make a meal of these alone.
The ala cart menu is reasonably priced and includes a wide range of dishes, including some that are extremely spicey, for those of us with a hankering for very hot food.
Service is always good, though sometimes when the place is hopping at the buffet, you might have to wait a little longer for your water refill, but its so worth it!
Highly recommended!!

I've been here several times before and thought the food and service were great. My wife and I went for dinner on a Tuesday night and the owner/cook was also waiting tables. I really think they need to find someone competent to replace the cook's wife/co-owner when she if off. She is what makes this place. Most of our food was luke-warm. The waiter seemed to forget about us for most of the night. Several dishes didn't show up. I had to get out of my chair a couple of times to get water refilled and inquire about the status of our order (SLOOOOOW!). Had to hound the water to get the bill, ended up standing at the cash for a couple of minutes to get his attention. Next time if the lady who normally waits tables is not there we'll go somewhere else.

This is a hard one for to write up...I did not Love the food...But, and a big but...I'm NOT a fan of curries and generally shy away from said foods...That said, I did LIKE the food and my Girlfriend who is 1/2 Malay really like the food.
We shared two dishes, the Lamb Curry and the fried noodles with beef. Both tasty, although not in the realm of what I would normally dine out on.
I'm giving the 8 bases on the fact that although it isn't what I would normally eat I still enjoyed it and take the word of my lady who said it may be shy of the street-stall fare she has enjoyed in Malaysia, and not as spicy as her favorite Malay spot in her hometown of Melbourne, but still very good!
The spring rolls were awesome...and wow, that chili sauce has bite!
I even tried the Ice Kacang for dessert...different but very good!
As for the waitress owner, I did find her to be unique, but more than anything passionate about the food!
Spring rolls, two main dishes, two drinks (one alcohol) and dessert was $55. Far from any complaints there!
It was a great start to and awesome evening!

I took my mom here for Mother's Day dinner and am very impressed even though it's my 1st time
It's a lil bit far from my place (i'm in the West End) but the drive is definitely worth it. Small restaurant but very cozy atmosphere and packed with patrons on this quiet and lovely Sunday
Service was great, we had our water glasses constantly refilled and when we asked to switch to a bigger table, the host easily complied. We tried the stir-fried noodle and the special chicken dish and while I'm not a native Malay, i am Asian and I loved it and so did my mom
Price is very reasonable as well, $26 for 2 and adding $5 for tips and we had a great dinner. My mom was given a rose at the end and that really made it a special night out. Thanks
Big thumbs up from me here. Will probably come back again soon.
P.S. One of the waitress is very cute! You gotta check her out!!

Superb! Both my wife and I had a wonderful experience here. The food is reminiscent of the dished I had while travelling in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. I had the vegetable curry - perfect! Spicy but not out of control. My wife had the been rendang and the fried mackerel. She was impressed with both. We will definitely return. Excellent on all accounts!

My travel schedule kept me away from Chahaya Malaysia for the last few years. It was like visiting and old dear friend. The fine hospitality of the owner and staff is rare in an establishment that has been around this long. The excellent quality, and care of preparation has not changed over the years. I have fallen in love with their menu all over again.

Sadly, I've only been privy to the lunch buffet. But I love it!!!!!! The waitress is a bit special, but she's efficient and knowledgeable, so I shall not complain. The buffet is a fun way to try and sample new things, and I've never found it to be terribly hot. Highly recommend the buffet...wished I lived a little closer to it so I could eat there more often!

I was in this restaurant on Friday and I must say that it was perfect! The food is superb and extremely authentic (I think the owner is a Malay Malaysian). This is the best Malaysian restaurant that I have been to in Canada! I have met the waitress that you talked about, and I think she is the wife of the owner. She has a strong personality for sure, but is also very informative when it comes to Singapore/Malaysian/Indonesian cuisine. She made excellent recommendation to us. This is not your average ethnic restaurant - I can tell that they put in a lot of efforts in decorating it. They even have batik (wax-dyed cloth from SE Asia) tablecloth and travel info for Malaysia! Make sure that you try their Malaysian tea or coffee!

Food is great, it's too bad there aren't more Malaysian restaurants in Ottawa. We will continue to go back for the food alone but it would be nice if another Malaysian restaurant opened up to shake their grip on the 'only one' in Ottawa. Service is below par, especially the owner/waitress woman - too cocky and arrogant for our likes. More competition might reduce their inflated prices as well.

Starting with the good, the Nasi Goreng was pretty good, and the Teh Tarik OMG, I thought I was in a mamak stall it was so good!!
The bad, well the service yes, the malay guy is REALLY nice, smiley and polite.. now the woman.. man oh man, I have rarely seen such a bad waitress/owner, miserable, not nice, not polite, impatient, telling us what is best for us + nasty & sarcastic comments. My brother was funny, he said, she doesn't realize the more she talks the less tip she's getting!!
But just because I liked that malay guy, co-owner I guess, I will recommend this restaurant, get the nasi goreng, mee goreng and you MUST finish off with a teh tarik, stay away from the koay teow though.

Definitely somewhere I want to go back. The food was really great. They have a great vegetarian selection. Very yummy noodles. I didn't like the atmosphere that much though - but I would still go back.

Incredible food, good prices and lots of left-overs to take home! Try the Chef's special chicken or the Malaysian fried noodles, you won't be disappointed. This restaurant is definitely one of Ottawa's best-kept secrets.

Good stuff! The hot is HOT, no holding back. Some wonderful dishes. I haven't been for a while, but my only complaint is that when I used to dine solo, they would seat me by the washroom- perhaps assuming they weren't going to get a worthwhile tip from a single diner (?)....hopefully that is no longer the case. Because the food is super!

Probably the only restaurant in Ottawa offering authentic Malaysian/Indonesian dishes. I know, because I was from Singapore, and although the number of dishes offered at this restaurant is not as numerous as the restaurants back home, eating here certainly satisfied my cravings for familiar dishes like rendang, spring rolls, fried noodle and keropok. Service was also good, with a home-style atmosphere. Would have been nice if more Malay style is evident in the decor though.

I haven't had Malay food this authentic since returning from a trip to Singapore and Malaysia. I have had their excellent satay with peanut sauce, some really good spring rolls, very flavourful curry fish and a beef rendang that was very special, among other dishes that I have also enjoyed. I have eaten there a number of times and find the food to be consistently fresh and delicious.

Based on all the reviews I read on restaurant.ca, I decided to try it out with my family. Boy were we disappointed. May be it's authentic to certain ppl....but this is not the Malaysian food I've had in Malaysia!! The service was slow and the food weren't great or authentic. Won't go back ever.
