Meh.
I checked out the new Wilf & Ada’s. The place looks and smells great. One thing about the old place that kind of grossed me out was that in the when the heat/AC came on, the place smelled like old basement. Not a great way to keep an appetite and it kept me from going on occasion.

The place looks hip, clean and chic. The menu is short and to the point. The staff is friendly and a lot younger. We had breakfast and decided to try their classic and the eggs Benedict. Overall the food was pretty average for the price and nothing really stood out. I wasn’t a big fan of their home fries. They seemed a little over done. My partner felt that her plate was little overpriced for the portion size and noted that the bacon was fattier than she expected. The bacon also lacked a bit of flavour which is unusual considering it’s BACON! I think it has more to do with the style of bacon which I think is local. Bearbrook farms has some awesome local bacon made on premises if you can get out to the Russell area. After trying Bearbrooks bacon, I could never buy store bought. It costs a little more, but it’s a world of difference.

Paying over $30 with tip and only one coffee seemed a bit much, but I guess you’re paying for the décor and novelty. I might be back, but for now I’ll save about $10 and have the same breakfast elsewhere.

How come people like this place??
I'll admit that I've been to Ada's too many times to count. It's close to where I work and there isn't a whole lot to choose from when you need a quick bite at lunch - but WHY do people talk so fondly about this place?
I went in once and Ada asked me why I had left the Thai place across the street. She had seen me walk in and then almost immediately walk out. I left because they didn't have a free table. Why was Ada looking out the window? She then went on to tell me (in rather graphic detail) how the Thai restaurant made her sick. Hard to get the image of a senior citizen with diarrhea out of your head.
Whether it's breakfast or lunch you're having, the kitchen feel the need to sprinkle dry parsley on everything. Also, who puts carrots and broccoli in an omelet?
For 9 bucks you get an average salad. Walk down Bank St. towards the Glebe and stop in at Olga's. You'll get better service, better food and a huge salad for only 6.50.

Terrible choice for my birthday brunch
I had been phoning around for a place to hold my annual birthday brunch. I had hoped that Ada's would accommodate my party because I love their pancake sandwich. I realized it might be a tight squeeze but they said that they would accommodate 20 no problem. The morning of, Ada phoned me and asked me if my friends and I were to arrive all at once, well of course not was my answer, and she said that it would be tough for her to save all those seats if people don't arrive all at once - well isn't that what a reservation is for? Most of my friends arrived on time, there were some latecomers and thus she gave away a table that was to be reserved for me! Fine, we'd get it back by the time they arrived. But from the time we entered the restaurant we received many snide, off handed comments about the size of our party. When I was saying goodbye to my friends and thanking them for coming, I was told to "move my butt" so that they could rearrange the tables. I found out that my friends were told that they could not have soft poached or sunny side up eggs - it's a breakfast restaurant isn't it? My one friend was charged $25 instead of $15 by accident and Ada went crazy when asked for a refund! She called my friend a "stupid broad" and told us that we were never to come back again! Well don't worry Ada, we won't come back. I have never been to a restaurant that was so ungrateful for our patronage. If you didn't want to serve a party of 20, next time just say no. We will always have fun looking back at crazy Ada - but Ada has lost 20 plus customers, and looked like a fool in front of her entire restaurant!

The Breakfast Sandwich makes me happy
The below reviews cover most of the basics about Ada's... the food is non-greasy greasy spoon awesome, the service is friendly, the place is nothing special to look at yet has an inexplicably homey and comfortable feeling even when it's packed...

But i have a new favourite item i must share with you, my restaurantthingy peoples...

The Breakfast Sandwich.

Possibly the bestest breakfast item in the city of Ottawa since someone took sausage and eggs and wrapped them in a beaver tail slathered with holladaise sauce (ok no one's actually done THAT yet but they SHOULD... anyways, moving on... Ada's Breakfast Sandwich...)...

Eggs and bacon, served between two thick pancakes, with a side of excellent little potato pancakes. I can't explain it, it's just breakfast perfection.

This work of art has been on their menu for ages and i have never tried it before. I bemoan my lost opportunities because this thing is great.

Yet ANOTHER reason to go to Ada's.

Great breakfast!
Ada's is a personal favorite ... I've been an occaisional visitor for years, and yet somehow Ada remembers what I'd ordered last time (breakfast quesadillas and orange juice) and has it going almost as soon as I'm seated.

The only complaint I may have is the seating is a bit cramped .. some of the tables are located right beside the kitchen in a corridor, and I've found the coffee sometimes tastes burned.

A great, inexpensive spot for breakfast

Friendly services
It's the first time we visited and the staffs were extremely friendly. This restaurant has lots of returning customers as other than us, everyone seem to know everyone else! Anyway, our strawberry waffle was very good, the coffee, eggs with sausages breakfast was also hot and fresh. With tips, it came to ~$20.

First visit disappointing
Having just moved from Kingston where we frequented several much loved hole-in-the-wall breakfast spots, we've been eagerly searching for comparably wonderful places in Ottawa. The reviews of Ada's gave us high hopes. We arrived around noon on a Sunday and expected to wait, but were seated within minutes. They gave us a lovely little sunny, warm table at the front with views of the neighbourhood, which was especially nice since it was so cold outside. After ordering and getting our coffee and oj, pleasantly sipping while reading the morning papers, we were asked by staff if we would move so that our table could be used with the adjoining 4-seater to seat a group of 6. Can you say no to that? They brought us to a wobbly table in the dirty, dim, and VERY COLD hallway at the back (aforementioned by another reviewer). I had waffles which were good and served with tasty sausage and "fresh fruit" (1 wedge orange, 1 wedge grapefruit and 1 slice melon). Coffee was nice and strong. Boyfriend had the breakfast club which was good, though the hash browns were raw and unappealing. 25$ for breakfast plus an irritating move halfway through from the best to the crappiest table in the joint...no thanks, we'll keep looking for that great breakfast spot!

- just nice to be able to do that - breakfast ordinary - less salty homefries than the broadway

NOBODY can step to Ada's. Alright, so the food is on the mediocre side of good, but you can't beat the service. Ada even knows my order! I love her.

I arrived the first day they opened years ago, and never went anywhere else. I don’t go because the food is better than anywhere, but rather because I’m most comfortable there. Nice folks, who treat you well – that’s the point. I can walk in and get what I need within a short period with no effort, no stress, and know exactly what I’m going to get. Cost ? A couple of dollars here or there, who cares?. I’m happy to pay to keep the place open. It’s the only real neighbourhood eatery around, since the Avenue closed.

My table was in a dirty hallway beside the kitchen. I had average tasting french toast with coffee. Refills don't exist here (I'm not talking about service - you actually have to buy another coffee). This meal cost about $3 more here than any other diner in town where they give free refills.
Service was OK but being in the hallway made me resent the staff constantly bumping my chair as they rushed past me with full trays. I don't see any reason to come back since better diners charge less money.

Went for breakfast on Friday, it was our second visit.
My b.f had the same thing both times - the breakfast quesadilla - he loves it!
The first time I had the special which was a toad-in-the-hole with pancakes, this time I had the breakfast bagel. Both were good. Personally I find it a bit pricey for a diner. If I am going to pay that much I would rather go to Cora's.
Service was excellent as always.

Surprised at the bad reviews. We are regulars here & the banana pancakes are one of my favourite dishes. Always busy - for a reason! Well received by all I have recommended go. Service very friendly & as speedy as possible (sometimes it's really busy) - diners are about good food & fast turnover. IMHO Ada's rocks!

Breakfast proved to be a disappointment. After having read the rave reviews, was expecting an above average breakfast. What came out was pre-mix batter pancakes, fake maple syrup (I suspect it was mostly corn syrup) and limp sausages. Service was friendly though.

Can't believe there isn't already a posting for Ada's - it's pretty well known around town, and very much loved. They do great breakfasts, offer fresh squeezed OJ (for a price), have fabulous Hollandaise sauce on their eggs Florentine, and make great fried potatoes. Ada is always smiling and attentive. Don't expect anything gussied up, it's a diner, and don't expect legroom, it's a crush on weekend mornings, up to about 1pm when the late risers come around. People are dead loyal to this place because of the personal service and way above average breakfast food. We miss Genevieve, amazing server.
