Good location
Small venue and well located. This was my first time at that restaurant. I Went there with 2 co-workers. The service was great, however, I was not too impressed with the food that I ordered. As an appetizer, we started with a regular plate of nachos which was very good. I then ordered the steak fajita sandwich with fries. The fries were overcooked and very dried and so was the meat in the sandwich. The bottom of the sandwich was overcooked, lightly burned and very dried. I enjoy food and seldom complain but I don't believe that I will return to that place for a meal.

Let down.
After reading the positive reviews about this place I’ve been looking forward to trying it out. Considering the neighbourhood, I was hoping for some upper scale Mexican or Mexican Fusion. What we got was something you would expect from the Royal Oak.

We had the half chicken half beef Nachos, open-faced steak fajita sandwich with fries (really?) and the Chicken Chimichanga. The Nachos were stacked high, but quantity does not trump quality. For the amount of cheese and meat on the Nachos it lacked flavour. It looked like something I could make at home or something I’d get in a Pub and not a Mexican place. Not sure what mixture of cheese they used, but a good Monterey Jack would have done a much better job. I’ve had a smaller portion of Nachos at Pancho Villa on Elgin that put these to shame. The open-faced steak fajita sandwich with fries was totally unappetizing. They buttered the bread with garlic butter, which seemed odd and not very Mexican. They then added some sautéed peppers and onions to the tough and grisliest piece I’ve steak I’ve ever tasted. At least cut it up so it doesn’t seem like the cheapest cut of meat ever. The tasteless Chimichanga was probably the only dish that was passable at best. It also looked like something made at a pub rather than a place called Agave Grill. We left most of what we ordered on the plate and no one seemed to care.

The place is small and nicely decorated. Service was mediocre. Waitresses spent most of their time chatting behind the bar or checking out their iPhones. Kitchen staff would saunter into the dinning area to chat or get drinks. When I worked in the kitchen and wanted something to drink, it was usually brought to the kitchen by a waitress. It’s unprofessional to have kitchen staff wandering around the dining room in shorts and their kitchen whites socializing.

The prices are in league with some of the better Mexican restaurants in town, but the food is not. You can certainly find much cheaper options in town with food that is more authentic and way better.

glad I finally went back.
Visited Agave last night after not having been in a long time. Was pleasantly surprised to see that very little has changed. Same warm, friendly staff; same great drinks and food. My friend had expressed interest in having a ''fruity drink'' to the gentleman who was taking care of us. He made her some coconut rum and triple sec concoction, with mixed juices. It was delicious! I went with a pint of some light beer, the name of which escapes me.

For mains she had the chicken empanada, and I went with the vegetarian enchiladas. I told the man how much I loved their hot sauce, so be brought me a bowl on the side. It’s really delicious. Both of us substituted the ''mixed greens'' for some of their home-made beans, which was a good choice. The meals were great (I loved mine and she apparently enjoyed hers, though I didn’t try it). The service was friendly, helpful and not rushed.

Two large mains, one and a half draught beer and a mixed drink came out to $51 with tax. I’ll be back again for sure. Soon.

Seems like a nice little spot!
Went here for lunch with my mom on a weekday. It wasn't too busy but we were seated in the middle of the room which I don't really like (not a lot of space). I had the southwestern salad with the steak which was really good. I'm not really one to go on about salad but it was very tasty for a nice summer day! I would definitely go back to try their dinner menu. I've been told by 2 other friends that they've had good experiences as well.

Good drinks and smelts
Discovered this place with a friend on a hot Saturday afternoon after we saw the enticing drinks in the window. Nice decor, a/c on high, and we ordered Tejitos. All the drinks (as of this review date) are around 7.95 for the cocktails/martinis, with the exception of the margarita being 10. They use Cazadores Respado tequila which is made from 100% blue agave; the only kind of tequila anyone should drink. When the drinks came, they were full of lime, mint, and tequila. It really hit the spot for us and we'd definitely go again as I think the pricing and value for the drinks are on par with those in the market and better than many places I've been to downtown.

Even though we weren't too hungry, we saw the smelts and they were delicious. For an appetizer, it was a good size too.

Service was prompt, but it wasn't super busy. Unlike a lot of places, they weren't understaffed. The decor and the atmosphere were nice too. We're going back for the margaritas!

Great (100.00)

Went here for the first time, Sun nite, late March 2010.
It's not going to displace any other mex/tex-mex places i like in O-town, but it was solid and i would go back.

Busy but not packed at dinner time on a Sunday. We called ahead for a rez and were told this was a good idea.

Seated promptly and drink orders taken within minutes. The bar makes really good tequila drinks. All four of us enjoyed.

They charge $3 for chips and salsa. I was a little put off by this when everywhere else provides this gratis. Chips and salsa are fine, nothing special, but the pico de gallo is chili pepper kick awesome and almost (almost) made me feel okay about the charge.

Fajitas were tasty, no complaints. Again, not the best in town, but i would have them again. The 'empanada' isn't really a pastry so much as a folded over big tortilla but it was good enough. Would try something else from the menu next time.

Service was pleasant and prompt throughout. Nice looking place.

Might not go out of my way but would go back.

Good food if you aren't in a rush
I came to this restaurant two weeks ago with two ther friends. We had made a reservation for a Friday night. We arrived, the bar area was busy. Our table was waiting for us. We looked over the menu and ordered drinks. Drinks came. More drinks came......waited a long time for the food. Not a big problem as we had some chips and salsa. When we ordered another round of drinks, the waiter said - so you want me to put in your food order?......Ummm, it's already been an hour.... the food fiannly arrives. It was great! I will be going back this summer!

Went here with a group of 6 on a Tuesday evening around 8 and had to wait for a table, so it's definitely a busy spot! Though I'm not sure why...the food was ok - I ordered the Mexican Flag with beef - it was ground beef, not steak. A friend ordered the chimichanga with beef and it was steak strips, for the same price, so I don't know why mine was ground beef. My dish was also too salty. My friend ordered the "veggie" version of the Mexican Flag which was cheese topped with sauce and more cheese - way too rich and greasy. Go to Ahora instead - better food at waaaaaay better prices (like, half the cost for just as much food and tastier in my opinion). The waiter was also a bit over-zealous. The place just didn't feel very authentic either.

Fantastic! A Little Gem I'm Glad I Discovered..
Entree: Nachos w/ Salsa
Meal: Mexican Flag
Drink: Sangria / Wine

When we went here, I had little / no expectations. I was more than pleasantly surprised. This place has an awesome atmosphere and great decor. The bar on entry is pretty unique and very nice.

The place was packed and has a great vibe to it. Their Sangria was phenomenal, they Nachos tasted home made and salsa very tasty.

The meal was very creative and nice to look at, even better to eat! I'm usually not a big bean fan but this was a nice side touch. I would definitely recommend the "Mexican Flag" to anyone and want to go again just to eat this again :)

The service was really good and these guys/management has put together a real little gem I'm glad I discovered. If this initial impression continues upon further visits, this will definitely be close to my list of top restaurants in Ottawa.

Don't go
We have had several bad experiences at this restaurant. Service is not friendly, food is mediocre at best. I actually found a hair in my salad and told the server, and was brushed off, and told that it wasn't any of the kitchen staffs? He then brought me my full bill, and became extra friendly when I was paying...
Another visit, a friend went to the bathroom and the facilities were unclean, and there was no soap in the washroom. Also, was charged $2 for mayonnaise, without being warned ahead of time. With lame excuses and without customer service being taken into account.
ciao
Not worth the money, or your time.

Agave again please!
Have been to Agave several times with friends. Recently decor has improved tremendously and the food continues to have great flavour and spice.  Agave is a place that is pretty loud, laid back and unpretentious.  The margaritas are tasty, the service is quick yet laid back and the owner makes you feel that he appreciates you being there.  I actually welcome the casual feel. What else should a place that serves Mexican be? I look forward to returning!

Where is the flavour going?
We have visited Agave 4-5 times over the last two years. We have tried and enjoyed the layer dip, quesadillas, enchilada, burritos and chimichangas. The decor has improved substantially and it is a lively place - do not arrive for a quiet meal as it is a small room, generally quite busy at peak times and your fellow diners will be imbibing daquiris.

On the positive side the food portions are good (we usually have to take something home) and the service is quick. However, over the time that we have visited the restaurant, the flavours appear to be disappearing! The beef burrito on our last two visits have featured a bland sauce and chewy chunks of beef. The chimichanga was long on peppers and onions and short on chicken and flavour. Also the meal arrived cold.

Lastly, I have not been called "big guy" in a restaurant in quite some time, and it is not an experience that I am hoping to relive. The owner (?) remains friendly but overall the service could be improved.

This was not in keeping with our first visits. Agave what has happened?

My favorite mexican restaurant
By far! The decor in this restaurant is so quaint, authentic looking and warm. It's pretty small. The staff is wonderful and pays attention to all details, refilling water frequently and suggesting several dishes, flavors. The prices are fair and the menu is superb- what a wonderful variety of unique food.... Chicken pizza with goat cheese, wonderful Enchiladas.... Very fresh tasting.
And the Sagria!! Mmm.

processed chicken, beware all!!!!!
The menu lists grilled blackened chicken breast...beware what they served came out of the freezer, then was microwaved, and worst of all, the server claimed it was fresh...never could you even make a real chicken breast taste that way, even if you tried!!!!! Shameful!
Overall, bad food, way too expensive...
Never going again!

I should try it again
I haven't been there for about six months, but I have very fond memories of it.

We always had the chicken nachos, which were always better than any offered at the variety of locations of Mexicali Rosa's. My wife really enjoyed the shrimp ceviche , but because I rarely eat seafood, only had it once.

I've had both the chicken and beef tacos and was pleased.

I've also split the chicken fajitas and was equally as pleased.

The service is always above average.

I'll go back when I return to the area, but that might be in the distant future because I'm seldome in Westboro.

If you happen to be making a trip to MEC or 10,000 Villages, it's worth your while to try it out.

Disappointing return to Agave....
We just came back tonight from having an awful dinner at Agave Grill (May 2008). We used to love this place for it's fresh menu and great service. There has obviously been some changes since we last had dinner there (Nov 2007), and when we asked if the menu had changed, the server said "there have been a lot of changes" and walked away. The restaurant is noisy, we could not hear each other at all. The bathrooms are dingy and smelly, and the overall appearance of the restaurant seems to radiate uncleanliness and lack of pride in service. Now the food, the Mexican Flag - I probably could have made better at home using an Old El Paso Taco kit. Tequila Chicken was in a gluey sauce and luke warm. The plates did not look appetizing at all.

I didn't finish my meal, and the server did not seem concerned.

Not surprisingly, we will not be returning to this place we once felt was a gem in the west wellington village area.

Drove by this cozy mexican resto, and decided to try it out one night. The service was top notch, food and drinks came quickly as well. It's a small restaurant, but cozy - some nice stained glass work, but could use a bit of warmth, other than just candles on the tables - something for some spicy mexican vibe?

Me and my date both ordered the fajitas, which came sizzlin with some nice sides. Bonus points, the tortillas were lightly grilled, and instead of just ordinary tobasco sauce, they brought us a bowl of pureed jalapeno's to spoon over. nice touch. Would definitely go back.

Went here for the first time last friday night after we couldn't get into Bella's just down the road. The service was great...very attentive and efficient. Food was good and price was reasonable, but I agree with other reviewers that the menu is very small, and not as authentic as somewhere like Pancho Villa. Most restaurants use corn tortillas for enchiladas, but they seem to use flour tortillas for everything, and there aren't even any tacos on the menu! It was fun to try a new place, and they have a nice bar area, but after walking by the kitchen I'm not convinced it's the cleanest place around, so I think I'll stick to Ahora or Pancho Villa if I want mexican.

I have been to Agave for dinner and lunch a few times, and have always enjoyed it. The food, especially the fajitas, is excellent and the drink selection is terrific... stellar beer on tap and big, tasty margaritas. The service is friendly, although sometimes a little brusque when the restaurant is busy. Good atmosphere, but the small space can be pretty loud sometimes. Prices are reasonable. Highly recommended.

Good (50.20)

After reading the good reviews on this site, my wife and I decided we would give it a try.

The restaurant was nice - cozy, and the staff seemed friendly.

We started with the Guacamole. Kind of expensive for chips and dip ($9 I think), but they were OK.

We both ordered the same entree, the Enchilada Platter. This looked and smelled good. Only problem is we both had the same experience: The ground beef in one enchilada was cold. Not just unheated, but chilled cold like it had been in a refrigerator. This put us both off, as it seemed to indicate that the food was not freshly prepared for us - it seemed as if it had been prepared in advance, and not thouroughly heated.

If not for this, the food would have been OK. I ate it without complaint anyway, as I was hungry. The chicken and the cheese enchiladas were fine.

Bottom line - the food was passable, but some things are not acceptable, and leave a bad memory.

Aside from the sightly pricey appetizer, the prices were good. We got out of there cheaper than we would have at the Lone Star.

On a positive note, someone at another table ordered the fajitas. They arrived steaming hot and sizzling, and they smelled great. Wish I'd ordered those!

Been here a few times and the food is pretty good. Its better than a lot of Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurants that you go to. Definately not the best Mexican food in town but a great place to get together with friends. Can get a little crowded at times. Steak is usually very well done. and I like the fact that the fajitas aern't just a big pile of onions.

my girlfriend raves about this restaurant, so I was kinda excited to go even though I hate mexican food. We showed up on the hottest day of the year, and the morons keep the front window open to appease the one table at the front, whilst everyone else inside died of heat!! Needless to say after our drink the waiter came to take our order and we just asked for the bill as my shirt was stuck to my body.... Went down the street to Absinthe where it was cool and the food very yummy! I will try this restaurant again maybe in December or something....

I have been here for dinner about 3-4 times now. Although I believe there are Mexican restaurants in town that serve more authentic food, Agave is still pretty good. I like the meals, they are average priced at best but you do get a big plate. The service is very good, but I find sometimes it can get a little cold near the front where the bar is. Overall, dining here is always been a good experience and also very consistant in food quality.

I had passed by this restaurant a number of times and have been intruiged, but finally had the chance to go with family being in town for Canada Day long weekend.

This isn't a very big place, maybe 15 tables at most and the interior is pretty nondescript. The menu has a good selection, probably 12-15 choices on the dinner menu not including salads.

We started with an order of calamari to share and it was cooked perfectly with an intersting idea to plate it with a side of salsa and guacamole. As for entrees, I a jumbo prawn pasta dish that was very good and very spicey. Someone else at our table had beef tenderloin medalions which were also very good and again very spicey(running theme here it seems). As for price, the entrees range between $12-$18 which is reasonable as the food is quite good and the servings are quite large. They have a good selection of traditional mexican entrees as well, that I look forward to trying on my next visit.

Overall, I was very pleased with the restaurant and I will definitely be returning again.
