Little gem in South Keys!
My friends and I went last night, on a recommendation by my coworker. The place was empty all night, just us and another table which I was surprised at. I ordered the rice paper rolls (my all time favorite) and my friends split the shrimp spring rolls, both were delicious. We then shared the duck house specialty & a shrimp dish, both were delicious. We especially loved the floral shaped food that came on each plate and the duck-shaped foil that our duck dish came in. The atmosphere was great too, I was very impressed with the chair covers, nice linens and beautifully covered menus. The service was impecable - they were always there to refill our water and take dishes away promptly. I will definitely be returning again to try new dishes!

Good dinner experience
We enjoyed a good time at this restaurant. The ambiance is very welcoming with our teas (lemongrass and jasmine) served in an elephant teapot and coordinated elephant cups. We opted for satay chicken and deep fried tofu as apetizers. This was followed by entrées consisting of crispy duck (a house specialty), basil beef (excellent) and deep fried trout fillet in sweet and sour sauce (slightly overcooked) accompanied by jasmine rice. Service was impeccable and we had a very good time there.

Contiues to server good food
This is one of my friend's favourites restaurants although I had not been here for a while. They have redone their tables and now fit a lot more in the same space. My friend ordered his usual Pat Thai while I went for Kao Gra-Prow i.e. chicken with basil, onion and bell pepper. We were both pleased with our mains and also with the complimentary soup that they always serve. The portions are not too large but sufficient.

Aiyara
Been there for lunch and dinner, food is high quality, service is great. The carvings they put on the plates are amazing worth the visit alone. Prices are comparable to other Thai in Ottawa. When ordering if you like things hot ask them to crank it to 5 (scale rating 0-5), hot but not crazy. Overall very good.

Hidden and waiting to be discovered
(This review will be updated from time to time. Last edited August 10)

My girlfriend and I have committed to visiting every Thai restaurant in Ottawa for the purpose of finding the best pad thai and lemongrass tea. As of this writing, we are about 1/3 done and Aiyara's pad thai gets the gold medal. The sweet/salt balance is perfect, the tamarind backdrop does not impose, the dish includes lime (unlike pretty much everywhere else) and the flavours take their time to move through your mouth.

This has been the go-to Thai place for many of my friends since long before I knew them. It's small and quiet, the lighting is dim, and we can't get enough of the elephants. We'll be back sooner than you think.

Solid thai - solid like an elephant!
Aiyara has two things going for it - solid tasty thai food, and elephants.

I have been here multiple times, most recently Feb 2009 and have no complaints. There may be better thai restaurants in Ottawa, but i won't go out of my way if i'm near Aiyara already. I give Aiyara points for consistently serving up tasty, well presented, good portions of food made from quality ingredients.

Service is always good. Water refilled, orders taken and empties whisked away in decent timing.

If i'm going to qualify this at al it's the lack of novelty - there are no dishes you can't find elsewhere, but everything they do that i've tried, they do very nicely.

And, of course, the elephants. Everywhere! It's a nice touch.

Don't be put off by the strip mall exterior, the inside is well decorated and pleasant.

Will be back, will send others, will ELEPHANTS, ELEPHANTS EVERYEHERE!!!!! ELEPHANTS!!!!!

DINE OUT BUDDY =0
This restaurant should be rated "10". The place is unassuming but great ambiance...the decor is very minimalistic...it compliments the over all interior and it is never overpowering. The food is simply excellent. Authentic Thai food it is. You get what you pay for...good food, good service and the price is just right.

Good Thai food
Aiyara means elephant in Thai, and you can see elephants everywhere in the restaurant (teapots, teacups, forks, spoons and etc)!
Food is good with fast service. I ordered the Pad Thai lunch special (come with soup), and with tax is only a bit over $10!!! Wow!

Fastest Thai Lunch I've had
Five of us had lunch, and the food was good standard Thai. The service was fast and accurate. I think we all ordered from the lunch specials. The presentation was nice - flowers made of pineapple slices and tomato decorated the plate. Rice was good and nicely mounded in a fancy shape. The curry came separately in a little sauce boat thing with a bent spoon or ladle. Good, fast, tasty. I'll be back.

Best Thai restaurant
This was my first experience with real Thai food (boo thai express!) and I thought it was great! My boyfriend brought me here for dinner a couple of months ago.

I loved the decorations; everything is elephants! It was beautiful. My Chicken Satay was great and my seafood meal was delicious and perfectly spicy.

The server was very attentive and offered me many re-fills of coffee. The dessert was excellent, we had mango, green tea, and lychee ice-cream. The chef's skills are amazing; I love the vegetable carvings!!!

I'd love to go back.

My favourite Thai place
I really enjoy the food from Aiyara, but until recently, had only had take out. I dined in with friends a couple of weeks ago for the first time. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside you feel like you have been swept away to Thailand. The owners are very gracious, and the presentation of the food is thoughtful, with elegant touches of carved fruit and vegetables. The food itself keeps me going back; it is deliciously flavourful, plentiful and reasonably priced. Definitely check it out!!

I have been in search of a "fave" Thai restaurant since the fire at the Siam Bistro. After months of searching I found the Aiyara, food is fabulous, freshly prepared, the kind of restaurant that gives you a craving to return. That's my benchmark, and it hot a bullseye. The service is wonderful as well.

I agree with maneater and munch. This place is a real find--just opposite Herongate Mall. I have been there twice for luch and once for supper. On all occasions my guests have been impressed with the decor, the gracious service and the food. I loved the curry and the spring rolls. I've suggested it to others who love Thai food and would go back any time myself.

THE only thing that i would actually order from them is their springrolls. The rest is garbage, even on their flyers the food looks swaggy, like wet noddles.Noodles are not suppose to be wet!Sautee meats are not well cooked or prepared, same with the vegetables, not sauteed or steamed, rice is hard like a rock, and i'm talking about their steamed rice!Yellow curry is full of water, chicken breast are tiny, same with the patatoes that come with it,very small portion, for what i'm paying for!Overall,go find another Thai cuisine, maybe bangkok noodle house or tuk tuk thai express. Both are quite authentic and delicious.

One of the nicest Thai restaurants in the city.

Clean and very nicely decorated. The look of Aiyara makes it stand out compared to most of the other tired looking Thai places in Ottawa.

The service was extremely attentive. Constant water and lemongrass tea refills - with no need for prompting. Proper timing on appetizers, soup, and mains. Very courteous servers - they bow after serving you anything.

The menu is not overly creative - but it covers all the bases and is executed well. Stand outs include the soups and yellow curry. They are generous with the Thai basil, kaffir lime leaves, and lemongrass - meaning the dishes here have more Thai flavours than other Ottawa Thai places.

Only downside is their wine list, if you want to call it that. You get a choice of one red or one white - neither is worth drinking. Get a small and tight wine list going here, and this could be one of the most complete restaurants in the city.

We went there once back in December of 2004. Like the other reviewers, the ambiance in the restuarant is really nice. However, we found the food to be relatively to be pricy consider the portion that they bring out. Furthermore, one of the Pork chop dish that we order came out pink on the inside. I think most restaurant will bring the dish back, throw it out and make you another one. But what they did was they either put it in the microwave or just reheat the remaining portion to make sure it is fully cooked. I think that dish was like $14. And the pork chop itself is about the size of my palm and only about 1 cm thick. How much does it cost for them to make another one? This is what I call penny wise, dollar foolish.

This is one of the best Thai restaurant in Ottawa. The food is very authetic and have a nice/clean atmosphere. The lunch special are inexpensive with nothing costing more than $9. I have the green chicken curry which was excellent and the portion was huge for a lunch portion...free soup was so so. Service was friendly and fast. Didn't have dinner but the price seem reasonable ($9-14)for Thai dishes, can't really imagine the portion would be less. Most Thai dishes are mean to be eaten with rice.

The restaurant is beautiful. Elephants are everywhere - including the dishes and cutlery! The service was swift, unobtrusive, and gracious. The food is delicious - hot, fragrant, flavourful, and filling - and accented by colourful, carved vegetables. It you're not sure what your spice tolerance is, though, order with caution. One of us ordered and received a dish that was quite mild; the rest ordered dishes that were not identified as 'hot' but turned out to be very spicy [whew!]. We ended up ordering lots of rice to neutralize some of the fire.

This new restaurant is pretty tasty and I would get it again if it weren't for the fact that I have never felt so ripped off in my life (and I didn't even pay!!)!! We ordered the takeout. The delivery was pretty quick. The dishes go for $8-$15 each. We bought 3 dishes figuring at the price, it would be enough to feed 3 people. Instead we were presented with about enough food to maybe fill 1 person. This amount cost about $40. If they plan to stay in business, they should either give larger portions or drop their prices 75%.
