Lovely atmosphere, good food, not quite perfect
Anthony's is a small but charming restaurant on Elgin. Colours are browns and beiges, wood floors - upscale and pleasant. The Sunday night menu includes a $20 prix fixe dinner that is an outstanding value. We had a lovely greens and beet salad (they were out of the baked brie), and for main courses three cheese ravioli and crusted tilapia - both excellent. The flourless chocolate cake desserts were wonderful.

Minor complaints - service was attentive and polite, but the waitress replaced your silverware on the table to keep for the next course instead of bringing new forks, and individual plates were removed when only half the table was finished (not European). And although the waitress was charming and generally attentive, water was not refilled unless requested, and she disappeared at the meal's conclusion for 5 minutes (probably for a smoke). Still a wonderful meal, excellent value, and worth a return trip - especially on Sunday.

Anthony's is an Elgin Street Jewel!
My partner and I have been long-time fans of this Elgin Street institution. Formerly known as the Ritz on Elgin, Anthony's (still the same owner) has reinvented itself with an updated decor and an inviting menu (with our old favourites) and wine list.

The night we went we had the Caesar and it was just as we remembered it - one of the best in the city! I had the striploin off the menu topped with shrimp and goat's cheese and I opted for a side pasta. My steak was cooked to perfection and was extremely flavourful. My partner had the emu stuffed with shrimp, peanuts and asparagus. It was exceptional and neat to try - not something you would find on most Ottawa menus and it was amazing. While we didn't have wine that evening, the wine list included a number of interesting options.

The service was very attentive and professional and the atmosphere was warm and embracing, which complimented our entire evening. We will definitely be back!!

This is NOT the Ritz...
For anyone who had dined at The Ritz in the past thinking that Anthony's on Elgin is the same place with a new name it most certainly is not. Terrible service from an unpleasant waitress, mediochre food despite the menu being identical to that of the Ritz and no longer the "fine dining" experience it used to be.

Save your money.

A spicy-sweet surprise
My partner and I have been regulars of Anthony's/Elgin Ritz for years and have always enjoyed the service and our meals. We tend to take advantage of the daily specials but tonight I was tempted to order off the menu - a new addition - the honey chipotle chicken breast...the slow burn of the smokey chili was well balanced by the sweet comfort from the honey...I'm not a fan of dishes that are too spicy so this hit the mark! Service as has always been our experience was gracious & professional and not lacking in a good sense of humour.

A delight experience
As regular customers of 'Anthony's Restaurant' (previously known as 'Ritz 3') for the last few years. My boyfriend and I just absolutely love this restaurant. The atmosphere is cozy and relax, the food is great and the service is friendly and helpful. As a vegetarian, I highly recommend the pasta dishes: Agneleti and Ravioli on the menu. They are delicious. My boyfriend surely love the steak with pesto and shrimp. I've been recommended this restaurant to my friends and family. And they just love it as much as I do.

2 People, $124, NOT WORTH IT.
I went to Anthony's on Elgin last night. I've been working in restaurants for 17 years so I'm a little critical, but not overly. I returned my steak right away before even touching it because it was clearly overcooked, after asking me to cut it in half at the table, the waiter asked me to get up from my table and look at it in a different light! After I finally got a new steak, it tasted horrible, not because they did anything to it (you can't, really) but because it was a low-grade beef. The fettucini Alfredo that was on the original plate was microwaved and re-set onto the new plate. Any decent cook can tell you what happens to fettucini Alfredo when you nuke it. I ate half my steak and one forkfull of my pasta (which I had to separate with my knife).
My girlfriend's chicken w/Chipotle-honey sauce was good, but the high sugar content of the sauce allows for it to get burnt very fast and that's what happened to it.
I train waiters for a living and found our waiter (the only waiter there) to be lacking professionalism. While we ate, though there were only 3 tables total, two couples walked-out due to a lack of service. I also don't like hearing a waiter say "okie-dokie, here's your steak!"
Our bill was $124 + tip ($45 was the Wolf Blass cab). With the amount of competition out there, I can honestly say I would NOT WASTE MY MONEY THERE AGAIN.

very good!
I went here for lunch recently and had the chicken piccata (with choice of sauce for side pasta, went with the bolognese). All in all, a very enjoyable meal. I would go back.

Oh my! Anthony's is yummy.
I visited this spot with my sister and was pleasantly surprised, yes, because it turned out to be a tasty restaurant on Elgin but also because of its relaxed atmosphere and attentive service.

My sister tried the lobster ravioli and I had the tortelini con pollo in leek sauce. We both really enjoyed our meals and didn't even leave one uneaten morsel on our plates! Our waiter was attentive but not overly intrusive and we both felt completely at ease and welcome to linger.

I'll be back and have already suggested several of my friends should go there. A great date place too!

The Ritz Elgin has changed to Anthony's on Elgin

I wanted to take this opportunity to announce that the Ritz on Elgin has recently changed its name to Anthony's on Elgin. Anthony's is still owned by Bob and Anthony Ford and you will see all of the same staff as well!

While your old favourites remain on the menu, you will also find some tempting new additions that we are quite proud of!

Stop by soon and check out the re-energized Anthony's on Elgin!

Our first date was at The Ritz - 11 years ago - and it is still our favorite restaurant for Valentine's Day and our Wedding Anniversary. Steve has been our waiter for years and he goes out of his way to make our dining experiences extra special. Thanks Steve and see you soon. PS bring back the Scallops à la Creole............:)

I went to the ritz this past sunday with some friends and was surprized at the profession attitude of the staff even with the place being empty. we were made to feel welcome. The food was excellent and surprizingly cheap! I'm a new fan.

This is the worst meal I have ever eaten at the Ritz. I am disappointed. I had to ask staff to stop smoking in the back. I was astonished at the main course, which looked like a plate of mush. It was spinach linguini, with goat. It had no taste, was oily, mushy, and tasted like it. The wine, was inferior, and tasted like it. The place needs a serious overhaul in all areas. Do something fast!!

Update: We decided to give the Ritz another chance after being disappointed by most of the other places on Elgin St and were pleasantly surprised to see that our favourite server had returned. The meal was excellent and the service was was professional and friendly. They are also in the midst of renovating which should only add to the experience. We will definitely be regulars once again.

My wife and I have been coming here for years and the food has been consistently good if not innovative. The decor is in dire need of an update (rickety chairs, scuffed floors, chipped paint, half dead plants in the window and those awful cramped bathrooms). What impressed us most was that we were usually greeted at the door with a handshake or even a hug by the familiar and friendly staff, but on our last two visits we didn't recognize anyone and the service was not not up to par. I guess it's the end of an era.

Jeez you guys almost scared me off going to the Ritz. Good thing you tore an even bigger strip off all the other restaurants on Elgin street, because I ended up taking my girlfriend to the Ritz as a 'lesser-of-a-few-evils' kind of option. Our waitress was funny and helpful, the food was very good, and the atmosphere was extremely comfortable - even cosy. Chippped paint? Pff not.. The place was immaculately clean (and well painted) and the chairs were far from rickety. The Ritz on Elgin is a great place for a cozy dinner or a date.

The ritz very cosy and dimmly lit on this sat evening i had the canelloni with ricotta and spinach it was very bland to taste and only 2 canelloni were given for the price i will not order this meal again in the restaurant i will save my italian food for preston street where i can get an authentic italian meal .
The service was excellent as well as the waitress had a sense of humor.
I ordered a cosmopolitan drink that they did not seem to know how to make one when brought to the table i found it to be very strong tasting to much alcohol so they took it back and added more cranberry juice to lessen the percentage of alcohol still the drink was not to my satisfaction so i left it the waitress noticed this and apologized for it and i was not charged for it i will stick to beer from now on at this bistro.
I will go back again for a different main course though.

I have been going to the Ritz since it opened in 1981. I have never had a bad meal. Their warm spinach salad is superb, and the Lumache to die for. The atmosphere could use a coat of paint, but it is not off-putting. Another graet experience.

I've only eaten here twice (about a year ago) because, like tia_taylor, I also think the other Ritzes are sub-par (don't get me started about the notoriously bad Canal Ritz). Despite being on Elgin Street (where most people don't go for the food), this one exceeded my expectations. Must have been on "on" nights: wonderful service, incredible featured wine that I've been looking for ever since and can't find anywhere, and above average food. Atmosphere nice, not too showy or contrived, just dim gentle style. Would go back if my boyfriend didn't have such an aversion to dining out on Elgin.

This has been one of my favourite downtown Italian restaurants for years. It is distinct from all the other 'Ritz's' in that it is privately owned and has good food (something that the other ones lack!), distinctive ambience (cozy, bistro-style), and great wine selection (variety, inexpensive). There's always daily specials in addition to the main menu. Since I have just returned to Ottawa after being away for several years -- the first thing I did was eat here. I must admit I was slightly disappointed with the lackluster service, and rubbery meatballs -- I'm hoping it was just a glitch -- so I definitely plan on returning to give them at least a couple of other chances for redemption. The server did, however, recommend an inexpensive, yet delicious, red wine that matched the verbal description that I gave him of what my palate yearned for.
