I don't understand the fuss
This is my Mom's favourite restaurant. I've never been for dinner, just many times for lunch and after work for tapas and I haven't been impressed. The service at lunch is terrible - so so so so slow, and they should know that people need to get back to work generally after lunch. The Gastropub is WAY better in this respect. The food at Allium is ok. I find a lot of it really salty or oily and the portions are small. For example, their pasta dish at lunch comes with truffle oil (sometimes) and it's literally drenched, it's really not appealing. And their lunch wraps come with nothing on the side except a couple of potato chips and maybe an orange slice. In general, I find a lot of the food here is "overkill" - too much of a good thing, you know? In my opinion, there are much better places to eat in this neighbourhood.

Ear Shattering Dining
Four of us ate here. The boar dish was delicious. My duck was nothing special but the accompaniments were excellent. The only problem was the noise level, no music just people talking. There mustn't be any soundproofing in the walls or ceilings. The place wasn't even entirely full, yet I had to shout to make myself heard to our friend diagonally across the table. It was such a relief to walk outside & hear silence. Much as we enjoyed the food, none of us will return because of the noise.

We had a great time
Went to allium on Saturday night. We had a Caesar salad with smoked pork belly, blood oranges, and a fat piece of garlic cheese toast. It was excellent, maybe a little big. We had what the call lollipops, I think because they are on sticks, not that you would lick them. It was sausage corndogs, tempura shrimp, and some crispy mushrooms, and some dips and salad/slaw, again really good. The main courses were a tuna dish, it had foie gras mousse, grapes, mushrooms, and a sweet and sour type sauce. This was definitely the highlight of the meal. We also had a surf and turf which was braised shortrib in pastry, and rare salmon with oranges and olives and a potato cake. Dessert was a great creme brulee.

Everything was very tasty, service was good. The place is looking a bit dated, but clean. The tables are a bit small. The prices really good I thought, it was $130 with a bottle of wine...a pinot noir from New Zealand.

I do come here often, not sure about all the bad reviews. I've never had a bad meal.

Maybe it was because of the snow and so little parking
The place needs to be upgraded. Not very inviting. Reminds me of restaurants in a little town that haven't changed atmosphere in 20 years. Food was good, nothing extraordinary about it but over-priced.Service was very good. I will not be back here till it has some upgrades.Would not recommend it.Try any of the ones next door

forgettable birthday experience
Just got back from Allium located on Holland Ave. Today was my birthday, my wife and I decided to try it out. First off my wife had called for reservations and asked if anything special was available for dessert since it was my b-day, such as writing happy b-day on the plate, or maybe a candle. She was told they could add a candle but that the dessert would not be complimentary, don't know the reason this was mentioned as my wife really wasn't looking for a handout. Once we got there, it took about 15-20 minutes before anyone came to us, and the first question was are we ready to order dinner, not asking if we wanted drinks, or if we had any questions. My wife being vegitarian asked if something other than the polenta could be made, a risotto that was included in my duck that i ordered was suggested. My wife asked for a veg suggestion on the app since there were two, and was told not to get anything as the risotto is heavy enough. My app was the poutine, which was fairly decent, although it could have used more hollandaise sauce, and the cheese was just lumped at top and not really spread throughout the dish. After our apps, about 5 minutes later, our mains came out, while the duck was cooked perfectly, the risotto underneath left alot to be desired. The mushrooms were burnt, not caremelized, but burnt black. The spinach was frozen spinach, luckily my wife's had fresh baby spinach but mine was frozen, for a $30 plate I expect fresh spinach. Secondly, a white wine risotto really did not go well with the duck breast at all. They hadnt planned anything for our dessert so we decided to skip it and leave. My lovely wife felt really bad about the bad meal for my b-day so she took me to Beckta for dessert. They took us in, treated us like kings. There was an amouse-bouche even though we werent ordering dinner, they said it would be better if we had something savory before something sweet. I got an amazing cheese plate with a ice wine pairing, and my wife got the chocolate bar(play on words) which was heavenly. The waiters came to us check on us constantly, the manager came to see how we were doing, the cheese somelier came to see how I liked my pairings. After that amazing food, without my wife saying anything, they brought out a small plate with two small dessert bites with happy b-day written in chocolate(they heard us talking and asked if it was my birthday). The whole experience at Beckta was amazing, but sadly I will not be going back to Allium.

I had exactly what D&M had - steak frites and a cup of soup (potato leek)for lunch - all good.

I'm going to deduct a mark for atmosphere, the downstairs restrooms could be a bit nicer.

Great steak & frites
We went for lunch. Had the above. Very nice with homemade fies and a small green salad. Steak is served in strips. Not for someone extremely hungry. More for white collar portions. Recommend the add-on cup of soup. Very nice place.

mmmm tapas!
We went for Monday night tapas last night and loved it! We had calamari, scallops, crab cake, lamb pogos, steak frites, pork loin, and mushroom tart. We finished with the 1/2 banoffee pie. The food was creative and delicious and service was friendly. The food, with 3 beverages came to $68 with tax.

Disappointing on so many levels
I'd been to Allium a few times for lunch and it was okay, so I decided to take a chance that their dinner would be good as well. Checked the website, as we had a few vegetarians in our group. Decent selection of vegetarian options, particularly in the appetizers. Called to make a reservation and to confirm that the website reflected what the menu actually was (I've been caught out on this many times before...why do restaurants bother posting their menus online if they don't keep them up to date?...but that's another issue).

Called the restaurant again the day of the reservation and was assured that the menu online was accurate.

Arrived for our 6:30 reservation to find a completely different menu (and were told that the owner was responsible for updating it...a week later, it still wasn't changed). One vegetarian appetizer (and a salad, but they don't count). One unintelligable (and ultimately inedible) vegetarian main. Okay, so our vegetarians weren't exactly pleased.

Allium is known for its Steak Frites...of which they were sold out at 6:30 on a Saturday evening. I know this is Ottawa and everyone dines out at 5, but that's truly insane. So...another section of our group alienated.

In the end, no one was happy and no one at Allium seemed to care. As the one who had researched and reserved, I felt awful despite the fact that I had checked and rechecked on the menu. I won't be making that mistake again.

Monday night tapas....
I came back to Allium for their Monday night tapas menu. Always wanted to try it...Overall, it was quite good. We ordered about 8 dishes for the two of us. My only complaint is that the food was very greesy and heavy. Perhaps their was a theme going on with deep frying? Nonetheless, it was very tasty, the service was good, and the place was jammed packed. Always a good sign.... The price was defintely fair. I don't remember the cost exactly, but it didn't dent our wallets too badly!

Always a great choice, I really enjoy Allium for consistently excellent, creative food. Their changing menu keeps us coming back, and I highly recommend it to all. It made me nervous when it took so long to reopen after the fire upstairs, so I'm happy it's still around to enjoy, which I keep on doing.
We just tried their Monday night tapas for the first time, and were pleased with it as well - a nice way to try a number of different things, and the prices were very reasonable.

Above average but not blown away
This was my third time at Allium. Ambience not bad. Tables somewhat close together. Presentation of food generally very good in that sort of french cuisine way. Portions average, some smaller than others. We were first to sample new menu change. Server could not describe dishes to us, which I was a little suprised at. For appetizer I had crispy calamari served with shrimp bisque and lemon creme fraiche. It was pretty good, $10.00
Main course - beef tenderloin with garlic mash potato, crispy portobello creamed spinach, zuchini sticks, and charred tomato relish. I didn't see the relish at all, the zuchini was not listed on the menu and I don't remember any crispy portobello.($29.00)
Tenderloin was served the way I ordered it with blue cheese on top (extra $3.00 for small piece of cheese). The cheese overpowers the filet so would not recommend asking for it. The spinach was under the filet, in my mind not quite appropriate (left me with squeeky teeth, you know what I mean if you have ever eaten spinach cooked in water until it looks like seaweed)and a little watery. I thought the zuchini although breaded and fried also seemed a little watery.
My wife had mariposa duck with butternut puree and maple beets. Generally she said she liked it. I ate a couple bites of the duck and was not entirely impressed, it seemed a little chewy (maybe its just me!)
Two apps, 3 beer, 1 wine , two mains approx. $110.00
Overall, pretty good food, good presentation, just not blown away. I don't think I will be back for a long while.
I often come away from these type of restaurants (fusion, french) feeling that I did not get my monies worth, maybe I'm just not sophisicated enough, I like my comfort food restaurants.

Tapas night
We tried the tapas night on Monday and the food was good - sweet pea soup, cream chowder, duck breast, pork tenderloin, fried portobello mushroom, beef on sticks... Yummy! The most exciting part was dessert – banoffe & crème brulée!!! Wow!
Anyway, cocktails were so-so, maybe should have the wine instead next time!
16 tapas, 4 cocktails & 4 desserts was $120 with tax.

Wonderful experience
My party of 6 visited Allium on a busy evening and everyone thought the food was exceptional. Presentation and taste were both top notch, and while the (ever-changing) menu isn't super-long, there are enough choices to please. The atmosphere was nice and there was good ambient music playing, but not too loud. The service was attentive. Apps range from $8-$11 and were all great. The crab cakes, spinach-brie phyllo pockets, and warm herbed goat cheese and tomato salad were particular standouts. All mains ($20-27 ish) were thoroughly enjoyed as well, in particular the duck breast meal and the surf & turf (bison steak & salmon). Portion sizes were more than adequate! The creme brulee is outstanding. I think the prices are very fair for what you get here. Any of those chefs from Restaurant Makeover, or Gordon Ramsay, would drool over this place.

A reliable favourite.

Unexpectedly excellent
We are from Washington, DC, and we are used to going to first-class restaurants. Allium, however, was something special. It was as good as, if not better, than any DC restaurant that we patronized. We went there on tapas night, as well as for lunch the next day. Each selection was excellent, and beautifully presented. Allium has a post-modern ambiance--comfortable, and with a simplicity of decor--which enhances the eating experience. The service was friendly and professional, and we had the impression that the staff enjoyed their work. We have already recommended Allium to friends, and we will certainly return.

A Great Tapas Experience
Our first visit to this restaurant was an enjoyable night out! Their new Monday night format of offering twenty+ types of tapas and affordable wine by the glass makes it worth the trip.

Service was good and the waiter was always present when needed to take our order and to make sure we had everything. Excellent Tapas ordered included crab tacos and the ostrich burger. Both delicious!!!

We will return for the full meal experience.

Good reviews, good restaurant
I went to this restaurant with a friend based on the reviews that I saw on this site and I have to say that I was impressed. Once again, the reviewers did not lead me astray. Fine dining in an upscale neighbourhood bistro with a good wine selection and friendly service. The pea soup was surprisingly rich and creamy, not a 'boring' soup at all, and the sesame shrimp were crunchy and perfect. The mains were cooked wonderfully with a nice side of vegetables, stuffed chicken for my companion and beef tenderloin for me. We are both people who like to eat out at nice restaurants and have eaten all over Europe and we can say that Allium really satisfies.

We were very impressed by this little gem on Holland Street!
We were here at the end of March 2007, with some friends, and we all had great meals. It was a bit loud, however, so we did find we were constantly yelling across the table. The food was very well prepared and delicious. We will return for sure!

First visit to Allium - hidden gem in my own backyard! Hadn't been to this location since it was last a pub and didn't realize such a fine bistro had opened.

Showed up at 6:30 without a reservation and took the only table available due to reservations - the place was empty when we arrived but full by the time we left an hour later for the theatre.

Small menu but certainly not a problem here - just enough delicious options. I had steak, my wife had seafood - both were beautifully cooked and presented. The steak was excellent.

$120 for two with a glass of wine each (shared a salad, shared a dessert) -- very reasonable.

We will be back.

This is my husband and mine's favorite restaurant. We eat here for every special occasion (it ain't cheap) and have yet to be displeased. They have a fabulous cheese plate ($13 for REALLY good stuff)that will fill you up fast and their other apps and entrees are always perfect and flavorful. You have to be careful to save room for the banofee tart for dessert. It is the best dessert. I am from New Orleans and have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world (Brennan family restaurants rank up there!) and Allium serves food of that quality. Their atmosphere is a bit stiff and they could do with different chairs (arms maybe) to support their clientelle after such great filling meals, but no complaints otherwise. Attentive staff and reasonable prices for the very high-quality food. STILL our fave after our 6th or 7th visit!!!

My boyfriend and I enjoyed dinner here last night. We were promptedly served fresh slices of crusty aromatic baguette with a side of parsley whipped butter. My boyfriend ordered the Broccoli Cream Cheese Cheddar soup for appetizer and the roasted quail dish that comes with sautéd mushrooms and asiago risotto. I ordered the seared scallops with citrus salsa, sundried tomato polenta, roasted squash, cherry tomatoes and zucchini and leeks, with chili oil. The waiter was kind enough to provide us with an extra soup spoon so that I could taste the soup as well. It was served in a large shallow bowl, and it was deliciously thick, rich and creamy. We both agreed that the lively flavours of each item in my scallop dish and savory flavours of each item in his quail dish complemented each other very well. My boyfriend declares that Allium is now his favourite restaurant.

Update:
We went back again for my birthday with a group of 8. I won't go into detail again, but the meal was equally as fabulous and the service was impeccable.
Can't wait to try it again!
-------------------------------------
Went for dinner Sat night for our anniversary and had the most fabulous meal.
Our starters were the crab salad and the Ahi tuna. Both were divine.
Our mains were the Filet of beef and the Seafood Duo. The beef melted in your mouth as did the scallops, and the basil sauce on the salmon was amazing.
The food was fresh and the flavours were perfectly suited.
The Angel's Gate Chardonnay and the Pinot Grigio were perfect accompaniments.
For dessert we tried the amazing Banofee Pie and the Chocolate Duo - both were to die for.
In a restaurant like this, you will not hear me complain about the price (unlike my previous review). I was perfectly happy to pay the $110 bill (2 cocktails, 2 apps, 2 mains, 2 glasses of wine, 2 desserts). This includes tax and the $18 discount from our Entertainment book.
Service was efficient and friendly but not intrusive.
We will definitely be back again - my b.f wants to come 12 times a year to sample each month's menu :

Went for dinner with a friend. Soup was amazing, lots of flavour. The squash/brie ravioli didn't do it for me; a little too crispy & fried, and the brie drained into the middle so it was lots of fried squash with a little blurb of brie in the middle. Wouldn't order that again. Others may like it, just not my cup of tea.
That said, the duck was just phenomenal. Perfectly cooked, wonderful cut, excellent sauce. The risotto accompanying it was marvellous. Friend had the beef tenderloin, which was excellent too. Wines by the glass were tasty (particularly liked the unoaked chardonnay). Next time...dessert -- which we'd had room, it looked fabulous.

Four of us went for dinner on Friday night; I had seen such good reviews on this site, which is how I decided where to go.

Straight 9's all across -- for the food, for the ambiance, for the excellent service and for the overall experience. I had the seared tuna appetizer and the steak -- both melted in my mouth. The recommended wine was a perfect match.

Prices were higher than what you'd expect to pay for, say, a more middle of the road-type place, but we had two drinks each, two appetizers, two mains, my sweetie had dessert and we both had coffee -- all for $120 -- so I considered that money well spent.

Good job, Allium. We will definitely be back.

I really had a great time again. I like that the specials are very well thought out. Some restaurants, they are just leftovers. The Tuna was magnificent, and the banoffee pie is killer. They said that this pie stays on the menu every month, sweet. Food seems to be getting better/more creative. I think it is a great restaurant

I came here on a friday night, reccomendation from a work coleague. I wasn't expecting the refinement we found. The appetizers are a really creative retro style(Grilled Cheese Sandiches, Pancakes etc.) It was quite whimsical. Everything was beautifully presented, with interesting flavours. The main course I had was Tuna, very rare, with avocado and mango, so good I could have eaten another one. Lemon Pie for dessert, perfert ending. The wine list was great, I found it to be cheaper than most other places, for the same thing. I think the bill for two of us with a bottle of Chardonnay, and a couple of cocktails was about $100. I thaout it was pretty good for a fantastic evening. I think they said that the menu changes entirely every month. I'll be back next month for sure

Absolutely fantastic!! On par with Domus. Everything was just so fantastic - I was simply utterly delighted. I highly suggest the Mittnacht Klack. Their menu does change every month and I can't wait to go back. I had a spinach/mushroom turnover with herbed tofu and St-Ambroise cheese, atop a chickpea/tomato ragoût, served with cilantro vinaigrette - I was told it was one of their best vegetarian dishes and I must agree - it is one of the best ones I've had in the city (it's about time restaurants start serving vegetarians something else than pasta!). The brie poutine was also quite interesting.

Had an amazing meal here. Decor is great. Had the Land and Sea which was a top sirloin steak marinated in garlic with asparagus, spinach and a a salmon cake with a mango chutney and a potoato croquette. All for $22 which I considered to be a good deal. The steak was perfectly cooked and so tender I could have cut it with my fork. Presentation was excellent. Service attentive and timely. I'd definately recommend it for a nice night out.

Loved it. Had beef tenderloin with a garlic cream sauce that was a perfect compliment to the meat. The steak was well seasoned and nicely cooked to order. The dish came with a mushroom filled puff pastry and potatoe and shallot fritters. Friends had a seafood pasta dish that they all really enjoyed and another had the mahi mahi which she said was good. The bread and herbed butter that came was awesome. The presentation is first class and very creative. Had the flourless chocolate cake which came with chocolate ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce accompanied with a little side dish of chocolate pudidng, very decadent but still lighter then it sounds and very satisfying. Enjoyed the atmosphere and thought the decor was nice. If I had to give any criticism I would have to say the service got a little slow half way through the meal, but I think our waiter got a little busier then expected, and we all found it a bit warm in the restaurant after a while... some fresh air would have been welcome. Will definately go back when I want a special meal out, cost for one with two glasses of wine was $65.

I went back last night-- I was fortunate enough to be there on the first night of their new menu (which changes every couple of months). Once again, the service was great and the food was amazing.

I had the chicken stuffed with asiago and red pepper over pesto fettuccine with grilled veggies ($19). Wow-- such a nice blend of flavours and perfect size portion. The quality and presentation of the food makes this one of the best restos in the city (in my humble opinion).

Dec 16, 2005--Went here for the first time last night-- absolutely fantastic!! This restaurant is tops for atmosphere, service and food, all at very reasonable prices.

I had the cashew crusted salmon over polenta with a chili, honey, soy coulis and steamed spinach and tomatoes ($18). The fish was fresh and cooked perfectly, as was everything else on my plate.

I will definitely be back!!

I came here for a business lunch with a medium sized group (10'ish). I had their house salad, and fried calamari sandwich. Squid is one of those seafoods that needs CAREFUL attention while cooking, otherwise it turns into rubber. When done right, it melts in your mouth. This was the case at Allium, perfectly cooked, beautiful presentation, excellent taste. I also had their salad - simple, yet tasty and very fresh. I also had a kir royale, and a cup of coffee to go with my banoffee pie dessert... whoa. Killer. Everything was top notch.

The atmosphere was nice. Nicely painted, decorated and the tables were appropriately spaced apart. No unnecessary cramming going on. There was some interesting artwork on the walls. Some at our table did not like it - but hey, that's what art is for - to be noticed!!!

The price was moderate, but worth it for the quality of food, presentation and taste. My full lunch, drinks, dessert included came out to $35 with a tip.

Overall, I will definitely be back and I would recommend this place to anyone driving by or working in the West end. Definitely a nice place to take a date or for business. Highly recommended!

Love this place. My BF and I have eaten dinner here twice and loved both experiences. Food is amazing. Last night we had the crab cake and spring rolls for appetizers. For our main, I had the grain fed chicken and he had the sirloin with crab. Delicious! Service is attentive but not intrusive. For dessert we split the chocolate martini - very good. We will definitely be back.
